A study of the Alleppey mud bank, one of many which occur annually with the onset of the southwest monsoon season in southern India, indicates that differences in stress-rate of strain relationships exist between the semi-consolidated bottom muds (suggested to be the source of the mudbank material) and dense suspensions (fluid mud) generated from the natural bottom. These differences appear to provide plausible explanations for: (1) generation and accumulation of the mud deposit during the monsoon, (2) preservation of the shorefast mudbank during the high energy event, and (3) disappearance and seaward dissipation of the mud bank after the cessation of the monsoon. These deposits cause seaward accretion of the coastline fronted by the mud bank while erosion occurs in inter-mudbank areas. Post-monsoonal conditions involve change of wave character and direction, the suspended mud settles to the bottom and flows down the shelf gradient to accumulate below wave base and consolidate for approximately nine months, until the next monsoon season.

Textural data of the sediments of Godavari delta indicate the control of energy over grain size and other statistical parameters. These parameters also explain the regional energy conditions, which are indicative of many sub-environments. The prime environmental factors viz. transportation, deposition and preservation vary in time and space, which in turn, produce variability as well as shared nature of grain size characteristics. Many sub-environments have similar depositional/energy regimes making their distinction a difficult task. It is also established that only groups of environments could be delineated, rather than individual environments, based on manual observations and discriminant plots of textural data.

A study on the Geoacoustic Properties of Marine Sediments

The objective of the present investigation is to develop possible relationships between geophysical and geotechnical properties of marine sediments from the east (Madras) and the west (Cochin) coasts of India by experimental and theoretical methods. Among different types of geophysical properties of the sediment, acoustical and electrical properties were measured in the experiment. To correlate the acoustical electrical and the geotechnical properties, experiments were conducted with the help of a modified consolidometer. The permeability was predicted from the Biot‐Stoll model with the use of geophysical and geotechnical parameters. The permeability predicted from the Biot‐Stoll model was compared with the measured values (both direct method and indirect method from consolidation testing). Permeability predicted from the Biot‐Stoll model agrees reasonably well with the measured values for both clays tested.
