The challenges associated with synthesizing porous materials1 mean that new classes of zeolites (zeotypes)—such as aluminosilicate zeolites2,3 and zeolite analogues4—together with new methods of preparing known zeotypes5, continue to be of great importance. Normally these materials are prepared hydrothermally with water as the solvent in a sealed autoclave under autogenous pressure6. The reaction mixture usually includes an organic template or ‘structure-directing agent’ that guides the synthesis pathway towards particular structures. Here we report the preparation of aluminophosphate zeolite analogues by using ionic liquids7 and eutectic mixtures8. An imidazolium-based ionic liquid acts as both solvent and template, leading to four zeotype frameworks under different experimental conditions. The structural characteristics of the materials can be traced back to the solvent chemistry used. Because of the vanishingly low vapour pressure of ionic liquids, synthesis takes place at ambient pressure, eliminating safety concerns associated with high hydrothermal pressures. The ionic liquid can also be recycled for further use. A choline chloride/urea eutectic mixture8 is also used in the preparation of a new zeotype framework.

The structural features of a family of layered aluminophosphates with Al3P4O163- stoichiometry (denoted L-n) have been discussed. Their 2D sheets are stabilized by protonated organic amines through H-bonding interactions with certain regularity. The templating ability of various organic amines for the experimental inorganic layers is investigated in terms of the energies of the host−template interactions. Some experimental phenomena, such as the packing sequence of the inorganic layers and the co-templating role of two types of templates on the formation of some structures, can be explained by energy calculation results. Some organic templates that can potentially direct the formation of a given host can be predicted. This further assists in the rational synthesis of 2D layered compounds with specific structures.

Structures and Templating Effect in the Formation of 2D Layered Aluminophosphates with Al3P4O163- Stoichiometry

A new two-dimensional aluminophosphate layer [Al2P3O10(OH)2][C6NH8] (compound 1) has been prepared from an alcoholic system using 4-methylpyridine (C6NH7) as a template. The as-synthesized product is characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, dynamic thermogravimetric, and 31P-, 27Al-, and 13C magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR analyses. The structure has been solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Compound 1 crystallized in the monoclinic space group P21/c (no. 14), with a = 8.686 (3) A, b = 21.240 (3) A, c = 8.799 (2) A, β = 113.23 (3)°, and Z = 4. The inorganic layers are constructed from alternating aluminum units (AlO4 and AlO5) and phosphorus units [PO4, PO3(OH), PO2(O)(OH)] and are featured by rows of edge-sharing bridged six-membered rings (6MRs) and zigzag four rings (4MRs).
