Shared Research Facilities "Petrophysics, Geomechanics and Paleomagnetism", created based on actively developing divisions of the Schmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth RAS, has advanced research equipment and unique methods, which determines the possibility of solving a wide range of applied and fundamental problems in Earth sciences. The main activities of the Shared Research Facilities "Petrophysics, Geomechanics and Paleomagnetism" are in the field of geomechanical modelling and petrophysics, paleomagnetism, rock magnetism and applied analytical studies of the composition and structure of minerals, rocks and materials. The research results carried out at the Center are used to solve actual problems of prospecting and exploration of oil and gas basins, mineral deposits, tectonics, global geodynamics and tectonophysics. The article presents the scientific equipment of the Center and its key characteristics, describes the methodological and analytical capabilities, and the most significant results of research groups.

—This work is devoted to constructing parametric mathematical models of effective elastic properties of carbonate rocks based on the effective medium theory (petroelastic models). These models have recently been particularly in demand for exploration geophysics because they link the elastic properties of hydrocarbon reservoir rocks with the parameters of the void space—the shape and volume concentration of pores, cracks, and voids, and the degree of their connectivity. These parameters are determined from the measured velocities of elastic waves. However, the number of the unknown model parameters is, as a rule, larger than the number of the measured quantities so that such problems are underdetermined. In this case, the inverse problem of finding the model parameters may have an infinite number of solutions. Constraining the sought parameters with taking into account their physical meaning and existing experimental data can significantly increase the reliability of the obtained results and reduce the region of possible solutions of the inverse problem. In this work, we propose new approaches for constraining variations in the unknown model parameters which cannot be established from direct measurements, namely, for the connectivity of voids, crack porosity, and crack aspect ratio. Based on the correlation between the parameter of connectivity of voids and permeability, we developed an approach for constraining the range of variations in the parameter of connectivity of voids which relies on the Kozeny–Carman equation. The results of triaxial testing of rock samples on a servo hydraulic testing machine (press) are used for estimating the upper limit of crack porosity and assessing the crack shape. The characteristics of microstructure of the studied rocks obtained with the use of the established constraints increase the reliability of the constructed petroelastic models for carbonate rocks. These models can be subsequently used in various geophysical studies implying a relationship between the analyzed processes or properties and the microstructure of the rocks.

Bounds for pore space parameters of petroelastic models of carbonate rocks

A two-dimensional discrete model for a hexagonal (closed-packed) lattice with elastically interacting round particles possessing two translational and one rotational degrees of freedom is considered. The linear differential-difference equations are obtained by the method of structural modeling to describe propagation of longitudinal, transverse and rotational waves in the medium. The dispersion properties of the model are analyzed. Existence of a backward wave is revealed. The numerical estimations of threshold frequencies of acoustic and rotational waves are given for some values of microstructure parameters.

Dispersion Properties of a Closed-Packed Lattice Consisting of Round Particles

An overview of wellbore methods of investigating the stress-strain state of the upper layers of the Earth’s crust is given in the paper. Some main methods of stress estimation from wellbore data are presented in the paper alongside with the analysis of applicability of these methods and uncertainty appearing after application. The reconstruction of stress profiles along the well trajectory based on information regarding wellbore breakouts and drilling-induced tensile fractures, information on the features of elastic waves’ propagation in the well surrounding rock masses, information on patterns in natural fractures’ spatial orientations and distributions is discussed in the paper. Estimation of stress state parameters based on minifracs and leak-off tests as well as on strain recovery techniques from oriented core samples from wells is also described here.

An Overview of Wellbore Methods of Investigating Stress State of the Upper Layers of the Earth’s Crust

The paper discusses microseismic monitoring during oil well stimulation by hydraulic fracturing, an emergent technology used for hydraulic fracturing layer control. The passive monitoring is a new widely developing technology of HFL control. The main factor affecting the results of passive seismic monitoring is the event location accuracy. The passive monitoring acquisition system utilizes one three components seismic probe deployed into the observation well. To evaluate the location accuracy of induced events for one observation well we applied traditional kinematic approach based on picking of earthquake P- and S-waves arrivals. The influence of geometric parameters of geophones location in a borehole, their quantity, picking errors of waves arrivals on the accuracy of microearthquakes location is studied.

The article presents a complex of laboratory core analyses conducted at the Center for Petrophysical and Geomechanical Research, Schmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth, Russian Academy of Sciences (CPGR IPE RAS). The complex provides for multiscale studies of the elastic properties, microstructure, composition, and porosity and permeability properties of rocks. The laboratory studies determine the dynamic and static elastic moduli, rock strength and creep parameters, and acoustic emission characteristics; 2D and 3D microstructure analysis is also performed. Dynamic elastic moduli are determined both under normal and reservoir-simulating conditions. Under normal conditions, multilevel ultrasound examination of samples is carried out; its results, together with those of microstructure analysis, are then used to determine the degree of inhomogeneity of the elastic properties of a sample, to reveal the anisotropy of these properties, and to compare the elastic properties of rocks at different scales. The results of geomechanical rock tests are necessary for constructing geomechanical models of reservoirs. The elastic parameters determined under normal and reservoir conditions are the basis for constructing correlation dependences that allow the geomechanical properties and principal stresses under reservoir conditions to be forecasted from well log data. Data on the elastic properties and microstructure of samples are used to construct different-scale models of the elastic properties of rocks under normal and reservoir conditions using petrophysical methods; these models further serve as a basis for petroelastic modeling of hydrocarbon fields and for predicting the viscoelastic behavior of rocks.
