A method of determining a sound localization filter for approximation of a head related transfer function. The method comprises storing a plurality of sets of initial parameters with respect to a plurality of predetermined direction angles about a front position of a listener into a memory, reading one of the sets of initial parameters from the memory in accordance with a localization shift signal, calculating an optimum filter parameter based on the read initial parameters, the optimum filter parameter needed to approximate desired frequency characteristics of the head related transfer function, determining filter coefficients of the sound localization filter based on the optimum filter parameter and supplying the determined filter coefficients to a coefficient buffer provided for the sound localization filter.

An algorithm for simulating multiple moving-sound sources in a virtual auditory space is developed. Sound sources are localized with balanced model approximation of principal basis vectors extracted from the head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) dataset. This approach enables a low complexity implementation and real-time rendering of multiple sound sources in motion.

The purpose of this project is to desig a systematical method in order to measure human directionality ability in horizontal plane with a single sound source. A completely virtual auditory model has been created in Matlab. The project consists of modeling binaural cues, designing digital filters, designing a test workbench, measuring listener's directionality and analyzing the data. The head related transfer function (HRTF) is computed by calculating the two most important binaural cues, interaural level difference (ILD) and interaural time difference (ITD). The platform is made in Matlab and all results have been shown by plots produced from Matlab code. The directionality test has been done with real human subjects and the results have been analyzed and presented.

Binaural Hearing-Human Ability of Sound Source Localization

We propose a method using an IIR filter for simple realization of sound image localization. The head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) of a dummy-head are approximated by third to seventh-order IIR filters. The binaural signal sounds using the approximated HRTFs are reproduced via two loudspeakers, and sound image localization on the horizontal plane is realized. Experiments on the direction and the elevation angle of the sound image are carried out with 3 subjects. The results of the experiments show that the localization on the horizontal plane using the approximated HRTFs is of the same accuracy as the case of FIR filters that simulate the HRTFs.
