The information theoretic approach and the collision resolution approach to multiaccess channels are reviewed in terms of the underlying communication problems that both are modeling. Some perspective on the strengths and weakness of these approaches is given, and the need of a more combined approach focused on coding and decoding techniques is argued.

A perspective on multiaccess channels

The stability of the Aloha random-access algorithm in an infinite-user slotted channel with multipacket-reception capability is considered. This channel is a generalization of the usual collision channel, in that it allows the correct reception of one or more packets involved in a collision. The number of successfully received packets in each slot is modeled as a random variable which depends exclusively on the number of simultaneously attempted transmissions. This general model includes as special cases channels with capture, noise, and code-division multiplexing. It is shown by drift analysis that the channel backlog Markov chain is ergodic if the packet-arrival rate is less than the expected number of packets successfully received in a collision of n as n goes to infinity. The properties of the backlog in the nonergodicity region are examined. >

Stability properties of slotted Aloha with multipacket reception capability

The authors consider the use of a multiple-beam adaptive array (MBAA) in a packet radio system. In an MBAA, a given set of antenna elements is used to form several antenna patterns simultaneously. When it is used in a packet radio system, an MBAA can successfully receive two or more overlapping packets at the same time. Each beam captures a different packet by automatically pointing its pattern toward one packet while nulling other, contending packets. It is shown how an MBAA can be integrated into a single-hop slotted ALOHA packet radio system, and the resulting throughput is analyzed for both finite- and infinite-user populations. >

This survey also considers the stability analysis of retrial queueing models.

A natural and easily verifiable sufficient condition is given for the nonergodicity of a Markov chain. The result provides a converse to a theorem of Pakes and implies as special cases several recently published sufficient conditions for the instability of various forms of slotted ALOHA systems with Markovian retransmissions.
