Review of research in feature-based design

Decisions made at the conceptual design stage have significant influence on factors such as costs, performance, reliability, safety and environmental impact of a product. However, knowledge of all the design requirements and constraints during this early phase of a product's life cycle is usually imprecise, approximate or unknown. Faced with such complexity, individual designers have restricted themselves to narrow, well-defined sub-tasks and as a result, progress in this area has been patchy and spasmodic. The purpose of this survey is to document the current state of research and development in this crucial design activity and in doing so, to identify avenues of fruitful exploration. In this paper, we provide a comparison of the advantages/disadvantages and limitations between the various techniques/tools and, where applicable, suggest possible future research directions.

Current research in the conceptual design of mechanical products

A method is presented for explicitly representing dimensions, tolerances, and geometric features in solid models. The method combines CSG and boundary representations in a graph structure called an object graph. Dimensions are represented by a relative position operator. The method can automatically translate changes in dimensional values into corresponding changes in geometry and topology. The representation provides an important foundation for higher-level application programs to automate tolerance analysis and synthesis. The implementation of a prototype interactive polyhedral modeler based on this representation is presented. >

Representing dimensions, tolerances, and features in MCAE systems

Features capture the engineering significance of a part model and serve as an important support tool for integrated manufacturing. Feature-based design systems typically act as ‘interpreters’ between the CAD and the CAM activities. These systems can be classified broadly into human-assisted feature definition systems, automatic feature recognition systems and design by features systems. Researchers have come to realize that the best system architecture for a feature-based system would be a blend of the above-mentioned approaches. This paper reviews the major developments in the field of feature-based modelling with particular emphasis on automatic feature recognition systems. Feature-based modelling approaches for integrated manufacturing: state-of-the-art survey and future research directions

It is a paradox that today's automated systems for geometry-based engineering activities such as process planning are not able to use geometric information directly. While geometric models have been available for some time, it is not proving easy to link them to decision-making systems. The main hope for building this bridge is feature recognition, in which the geometry of an object is interpreted in terms of geometric elements of engineering significance. In this speculative paper, some of the problems of applying such a process to shape models are outlined, and some lines of advance are suggested. In particular, the possible use of the set-theoretic (constructive solid geometry (CSG)) solid model for feature recognition is discussed.
