Amines play vital roles in agricultural, pharmaceutical, and food industries, but volatile amine vapors are serious threats to human health. Previously reported fluorescent sensors for amine vapor detection usually suffer from aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect and need to be dispersed in solution or matrix materials. Herein, based on the fluorogen of 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)quinazolin-4(3H)-one (HPQ) with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties, we have developed a fluorescent sensor HPQ-Ac for light-up detection of amine vapors through aminolysis reaction. The portable HPQ-Ac sensor can be easily prepared by directly depositing on filter paper, and it can only light up via exposure to amine vapors among various volatile organic compounds. Taking advantage of its portability and high sensitivity for amine vapors, HPQ-Ac sensor can also be used for food spoilage detection and fluorescent invisible ink.

Fluorescent Light-Up Detection of Amine Vapors Based on Aggregation-Induced Emission

This article focuses on the substituent effect on the reactivity and selectivity of the ring-opening direction in the reaction of five-membered cyclic carbonates with n-hexylamine. The reactivity of the cyclic carbonate and the formation selectivity of the adduct with a secondary hydroxyl group increased as a stronger electron-withdrawing group was introduced at the α-methylene of the cyclic carbonate. These results are discussed on the basis of the stability of intermediates, primary and secondary alcoholate anions, Mulliken charges on carbonyl carbon, and the bond lengths and orders of the OCO single bond. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Model reaction for the synthesis of polyhydroxyurethanes from cyclic carbonates with amines: Substituent effect on the reactivity and selectivity of ring‐opening direction in the reaction of five‐membered cyclic carbonates with amine

Magnetic polymethylmethacrylate (mPMMA) microbeads carrying ethylene diamine (EDA) were prepared for the removal of heavy metal ions (i.e., copper, lead, cadmium, and mercury) from aqueous solutions containing different amount of these ions (5–700 mg/L) and at different pH values (2.0–8.0). Adsorption of heavy metal ions on the unmodified mPMMA microbeads was very low (3.6 μmol/g for Cu(II), 4.2 μmol/g for Pb(II), 4.6 μmol/g for Cd(II), and 2.9 μmol/g for Hg(II)). EDA-incorporation significantly increased the heavy metal adsorption (201 μmol/g for Cu(II), 186 μmol/g for Pb(II), 162 μmol/g for Cd(II), and 150 μmol/g for Hg(II)). Competitive adsorption capacities (in the case of adsorption from mixture) were determined to be 79.8 μmol/g for Cu(II), 58.7 μmol/g for Pb(II), 52.4 μmol/g for Cd(II), and 45.3 μmol/g for Hg(II). The observed affinity order in adsorption was found to be Cu(II) > Pb(II) > Cd(II) > Hg(II) for both under noncompetitive and competitive conditions. The adsorption of heavy metal ions increased with increasing pH and reached a plateau value at around pH 5.0. The optimal pH range for heavy-metal removal was shown to be from 5.0 to 8.0. Desorption of heavy-metal ions was achieved using 0.1 M HNO3. The maximum elution value was as high as 98%. These microbeads are suitable for repeated use for more than five adsorption-desorption cycles without considerable loss of adsorption capacity. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Preparation and characterization of magnetic polymethylmethacrylate microbeads carrying ethylene diamine for removal of Cu(II), Cd(II), Pb(II), and Hg(II) from aqueous solutions

(13)C NMR chemical shifts and nu(C[double bond]O) frequencies have been measured for several series of phenyl- or acyl-substituted phenyl acetates and for acyl-substituted methyl acetates to investigate the substituent-induced changes in the electrophilic character of the carbonyl carbon. Charge density, bond order, and energy calculations have also been performed. The spectroscopic and charge density results indicate that opposite to the conventional thinking, electron-withdrawing substituents do not increase the electrophilicity of the carbonyl carbon but instead decrease it. On the other hand, reaction energies of the isodesmic reactions designed show that electron-withdrawing substituents destabilize the carbonyl derivatives investigated. So, a significant ground-state destabilization of carboxylic acid esters, and carbonyl compounds in general, due to the decreased resonance stabilization, is proposed as a novel concept to explain both the increase in their reactivity and the changes in the chemical shifts and carbonyl frequencies induced by electron-withdrawing substituents.

Electron-withdrawing substituents decrease the electrophilicity of the carbonyl carbon. An investigation with the aid of (13)C NMR chemical shifts, nu(C[double bond]O) frequency values, charge densities, and isodesmic reactions to interpret substituent effects on reactivity.

Fischer carbene complexes have over the last 25 years become a major focus of many synthetic groups. On the other hand, until recently there have been only a few kinetic and/or thermodynamic studies of even the simplest reactions of these complexes. A number of such studies have now been carried out in my laboratory. This review summarizes the results obtained thus far and focuses on three areas: (1) thermodynamic and kinetic acidities of carbene complexes that contain an ionizable proton on the carbon adjacent to the carbene carbon; (2) mechanism and structure-reactivity relationships in the reactions of carbene complexes with nucleophiles; (3) mechanism of hydrolysis of carbene complexes with and without ionizable protons.
