The SLD experiment at the Stanford Linear Collider reports new measurements of leptonic asymmetry parameters with polarized Z{sup 0}'s. The authors study the reaction e{sub L,R}{sup -} + e{sup +} {yields} Z{sup 0} {yields} e{sup +}e{sup -}, {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -} and {tau}{sup -}{tau}{sup +}, where L and R denote left- and right-handed polarized electron beams. The 1996, 1997 and winter 1998 SLD runs are included in this analysis and combined with published data from the 1993-95 runs. Preliminary results are as follows: A{sub e} = 0.1504 {+-} 0.0072, A{sub {mu}} = 0.120 {+-} 0.019 and A{sub {tau}} = 0.142 {+-} 0.019. If lepton universality is assumed, a combined asymmetry parameter A{sub e{mu}{tau}} = 0.1459 {+-} 0.0063 results. This translates into an effective value of the weak mixing angle sin{sup 2} {theta}{sub W}{sup eff} = 0.2317 {+-} 0.008 at the Z{sup 0} pole.

An Improved Direct Measurement of Leptonic Coupling Asymmetries with Polarized Z bosons

During 1996, the SLD collaboration completed construction and began operation of a new charge-coupled device (CCD) vertex detector (VXD3). Since then, its performance has been studied in detail and a new topological vertexing technique has been developed. In this paper, we discuss the design of VXD3, procedures for aligning it, and the tracking and vertexing improvements that have led to its world-record performance.

Current performance of the SLD VXD3

The SLD upgrade CCD vertex detector (VXD3) is described. Its 307 million pixels are assembled from 96 3.2 Mpixel CCDs of 13 cm{sup 2} each. The system has evolved from the pioneering CCD vertex detector VXD2, which has operated in SLD since 1992. The CCDs of VXD3 are mounted on beryllium ladders in three cylinders, providing three space point measurements along each track of about 5 microns resolution in all three co-ordinates. Significant improvements are achieved with VXD3 in impact parameter resolution (about a factor of two) and acceptance ({approximately}20%) through optimized geometry and reduced material. New readout electronics have been developed for this system.

Current Performance of the SLD VXD3

During the past year, the SLD collaboration completed the construction and began the operation of a new vertex detector (VXD3) employing 307 million pixels. This detector, based on 96 CCDs of 13 cm/sup 2/ area each, is an upgrade of the original vertex detector of SLD (VXD2), made possible by advances in the technology of CCD detectors. Its improved impact parameter resolution, larger solid angle coverage and virtually error-free track linking will enhance the SLD measurement of the polarization-enhanced forward-backward asymmetry for b and c-quarks, increase the precision of the measurement of the b-fraction in hadronic Z decays, and open the possibility to observe B/sub s//sup 0/-mixing. Full separation of primary, secondary and tertiary vertices is accessible. A description of the mechanics and electronics of VXD3 are presented along with results from the first data.
