A term first coined by Mott back in 1968 a “pseudogap” is the depletion of the electronic density of states at the Fermi level, and pseudogaps have been observed in many systems. However, since the discovery of the high-temperature superconductors (HTSC) in 1986, the central role attributed to the pseudogap in these systems has meant that by many researchers now associate the term pseudogap exclusively with the HTSC phenomenon. Recently, the problem has got a lot of new attention with the rediscovery of two distinct energy scales (“two-gap scenario”) and charge density waves patterns in the cuprates. Despite many excellent reviews on the pseudogap phenomenon in HTSC, published from its very discovery up to now, the mechanism of the pseudogap and its relation to superconductivity are still open questions. The present review represents a contribution dealing with the pseudogap, focusing on results from angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and ends up with the conclusion that the pseudogap in cuprates is a complex phenomenon which includes at least three different “intertwined” orders: spin and charge density waves and preformed pairs, which appears in different parts of the phase diagram. The density waves in cuprates are competing to superconductivity for the electronic states but, on the other hand, should drive the electronic structure to vicinity of Lifshitz transition, that could be a key similarity between the superconducting cuprates and iron-based superconductors. One may also note that since the pseudogap in cuprates has multiple origins there is no need to recoin the term suggested by Mott.

Pseudogap from ARPES experiment: three gaps in cuprates and topological superconductivity

Searching for unconventional Cooper pairing states has been at the heart of superconductivity research since the discovery of BCS superconductors. In particular, spin-triplet odd-parity pairing states were recently revisited due to the possibility of tuning towards topological superconductors. In this context, it is interesting to note a recent proposal that such a spin-triplet pairing instability occurs when the band filling is near van Hove singularities (vHS) associated with momenta away from time-reversal invariant momenta named type-II vHS. However, this result was obtained within a weak coupling renormalization group with Fermi surface patch approximation. To explore superconducting instabilities beyond this weak coupling Fermi surface patch approximation, we perform systematic study on the Hubbard model in a two-dimensional square lattice using three different methods: random phase approximation, large-scale dynamical mean-field theory simulations with continuous time quantum Monte Carlo (CTQMC) impurity solver, and large-scale dynamical cluster simulations with the CTQMC cluster solver. We find, in a wide doping range centered around the type-II van Hove filling, a twofold degenerate, spin-triplet, odd-parity $p$-wave pairing state emerges due to repulsive interaction, when the Fermi surface is not sufficiently nested. Possible relevance of our findings to the recently discovered superconductors ${\mathrm{LaO}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{F}}_{x}{\mathrm{BiS}}_{2},\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{Ir}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Pt}}_{x}{\mathrm{Te}}_{2}$, and proposed doped ${\mathrm{BC}}_{3}$ are also discussed.

Evidence for spin-triplet odd-parity superconductivity close to type-II van Hove singularities

The transition metal dichalcogenide Ir1−xPtxTe2 displays both superconductivity and a topological band structure. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we obtain a comprehensive understanding of the three-dimensional electronic structure in the normal state of Ir1−xPtxTe2 for doping levels from x = 0.1 to 0.4, which spans the composition range of a superconducting state to a non-superconducting state. Many features of the electronic structure can be attributed to strong Te–Te interactions between the layers of the layered crystal structure and can be resolved by photon energy dependent measurements. We demonstrate that the type-II Dirac fermions can be successfully tuned via Pt doping, where the Dirac point lies close to the Fermi level for x = 0.1. The band evolution vs doping provides a clearer understanding of the relationship between the superconductivity and electronic structure. In addition, the β band in the superconducting samples locates the system close to a type-II van Hove singularity, where spin triplet paring symmetry has been predicted. Our results provide a comprehensive understanding of the band structure of Ir1−xPtxTe2, and we discuss the possibilities of the existence of topological superconductivity in this system.

A comprehensive ARPES study on the type-II Dirac semimetal candidate Ir1−xPtxTe2

Phase separation in the nanometer- to micrometer-scale is characteristic for correlated materials, for example, high temperature superconductors, colossal magnetoresistance manganites, Mott insulators, etc. Resolving the electronic structure with spatially-resolved information is critical for revealing the fundamental physics of such inhomogeneous systems yet this is challenging experimentally. Here by using nanometer- and micrometer-spot angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopies (NanoARPES and MicroARPES), we reveal the spatially-resolved electronic structure in the stripe phase of IrTe$_2$. Each separated domain shows two-fold symmetric electronic structure with the mirror axis aligned along 3 equivalent directions, and 6$\times$1 replicas are clearly identified. Moreover, such electronic structure inhomogeneity disappears across the stripe phase transition, suggesting that electronic phase with broken symmetry induced by the 6$\times$1 modulation is directly related to the stripe phase transition of IrTe$_2$. Our work demonstrates the capability of NanoARPES and MicroARPES in elucidating the fundamental physics of phase-separated materials.

Spatially-resolved electronic structure of stripe domains in IrTe$_2$ through electronic structure microscopy.

Comprehensive studies of the electronic states of Ir 5d and Te 5p have been performed to elucidate the origin of the structural phase transition in IrTe2 by combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering. While no considerable changes are observed in the configuration of the Ir 5d electronic states across the transition, indicating that the Ir 5d orbitals are not involved in the transition, we reveal a van Hove singularity at the Fermi level (EF) related to the Te px+py orbitals, which is removed from EF at low temperatures. The wavevector connecting the adjacent saddle points is consistent with the in-plane projection of the superstructure modulation wavevector. These results can be qualitatively understood with the Rice-Scott "saddle-point" mechanism, while effects of the lattice distortions need to be additionally involved.
