Theory of strong interactions

The present article gives a general discussion of the problems arising in a theory of elementary particles, together with a survey of papers1-6 that have been published on this subject in German periodicals. These papers deal with a special model for the theory of elementary particles that has been constructed to show some of the main features of such a theory; the author believes that the model does in fact represent a system of elementary particles and their interactions in a manner qualitatively suitable also for the real system of particles.

Classification of the fundamental particles

The compound hypothesis for hyperons and heavy mesons is restated, modifying an earlier assumption on the isotopic spin of ${\ensuremath{\theta}}^{0}$. $\ensuremath{\theta}$ mesons and $\overline{\ensuremath{\theta}}$ mesons (antiparticles) are assumed to have isotopic spin $T=\frac{1}{2}$, as proposed by Gell-Mann. The total number of heavy mesons ($\ensuremath{\theta}$ mesons minus $\overline{\ensuremath{\theta}}$ mesons) is conserved in strong interactions (fast reactions). The fundamental reaction is thus pair creation of $\ensuremath{\theta}+\overline{\ensuremath{\theta}}$, with $\ensuremath{\theta}$ mesons free and $\overline{\ensuremath{\theta}}$ mesons either free or bound to nucleons ($\mathfrak{N}$). Hence $\mathfrak{N}+\overline{\ensuremath{\theta}}$ can form $T=0$ and $T=1$ multiplets which are identified with the ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{0}$ singlet and the $\ensuremath{\Sigma}$ triplet, respectively. The facts known about hyperons, associated production, and interaction of heavy mesons with nucleons are consistent with our assumptions. A discussion of $T$-multiplets among hypernuclei is given. Some experiments which may throw new light on the compound hypothesis are discussed.

If an intermediate or strong coupling calculation were made, the important core term which provides the entire contribution to the low energy (z.+, m ) cross section in the pseudoscalar theory might be damped out\" and the two coupling schemes would give approximately the same ratio for these cross sections.
