ABSTRACT In this paper, a multiband hybrid reconfigurable antenna with enhanced gain is reported to support Wi‐Fi 6E, indoor WLAN, and 5G new radio (NR) wireless standards. The reported structure consists of a half‐hexagonal‐shaped radiating element along with two symmetrical rectangular single‐split resonators interconnected via two PIN diodes to achieve multiband frequency and pattern reconfigurability of the proposed antenna and a single‐layer frequency selective surface (FSS) to enhance the gain. By configuring these PIN diodes in three distinct modes, the reported antenna allows for independent reconfigurability to support multipurpose sub‐6GHz and Wi‐Fi 6E (3.3, 3.5, 5.1, 5.3, and 6.5 GHz) wireless standards, respectively. The results also showed that the antenna is capable of maintaining a frequency of 6.5 GHz in all modes while reconfiguring its radiation pattern in three different directions, namely, 265°, 13°, and 337° on the xz plane. The gain of the proposed hybrid reconfigurable antenna is enhanced by an FSS‐based reflector placed below the radiating structure at a distance of to the lowest operating frequency (3.3 GHz), and the gain is enhanced by 2–4 dBi as compared without FSS. The reported hybrid reconfigurable antenna is implemented on an FR‐4 substrate with a depth of 1.6 mm and a relative permittivity of 4.4. For validation of the proposed structure, the experimental results are compared with the simulated results. 

A Gain‐Enhanced Multiband Frequency and Pattern Reconfigurable Antenna for Wi‐Fi 6E and 5G New Radio Wireless Standards

In this paper, a novel V-shaped slotted single, dual band frequency reconfigurable antenna is presented for upcoming 5G and C-band applications. The antenna operates around 3.9 GHz (5G), around 5.5 GHz Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) and 6.37 GHz for C-band applications. For obtaining the reconfigurability in the designed structure a V-shaped slot is etched on hexagonal shape radiating element and a PIN diode is adopted. If the PIN diode is ON state, the proposed radiating structure provides dual band operations in the frequency range of 3.49-4.46 GHz with centre frequency around 3.9 GHz and 5.59-7.59 GHz with centre frequency around 6.37 GHz with a bandwidth of 970 MHz, 2000 MHz respectively, else provides a single band operation in the frequency range of 4.03-7.14 GHz with centre frequency around 5.5 GHz with bandwidth of 3110 MHz. A hexagonal shape radiating patch element is incorporated on FR-4 substrate with overall size of (30 x 28 x 1.6) mm3. A comparative analysis with cutting edge work demonstrates that the presented designed antenna structure has the advantages of compact size, improved bandwidth and gain.

A Novel V-shaped slotted single, dual band frequency reconfigurable antenna for C-band / 5G applications

In this Communication, a simple hexagonal shape frequency reconfigurable antenna is designed with reduced ground plane for new C-band 5G (3.7GHz-3.98GHz applications. To enable frequency reconfiguration a PIN diode is adopted in the reduced ground plane with a gap size of 1mm. When diode is in OFF state the designed antenna resonates at 3.6 GHz with a bandwidth of 760 MHz, range used for Wi-Max and in ON state the designed structure resonates at 3.8 GHz with a bandwidth of 930 MHz, range used for New C-band 5G networks. The designed structure of an antenna is etched on a Fr-4 substrate with a size of 38X36X1.6mm3.

A compact multiband Fox-Face compound reconfigurable antenna is proposed in this paper using two PIN diodes. On switching the states of the PIN diodes, the reconfigurable antenna resonates at multiple bands, having one band in each case for which the bandwidth is highest and is considered as the primary band. Primary frequency band is reconfigurable from 5.5GHz (used in 5G services) to 6.7GHz (used in digital high-capacity fixed point-to-point links), while a secondary band is present at around 9GHz (used in satellite and military applications) in all the four configurations possible in the design.

Fox-Face Compound Reconfigurable Antenna for Wireless Systems

A wideband microstrip patch antenna design is proposed in this paper having resonant frequency at around 5GHz and capability of bandwidth reconfiguration. The proposed design is a compact bidirectional wideband antenna having wideband starting frequency at around 5GHz and keeping the design simple, provides a high reconfigurability of bandwidth from 0.8GHz to 3.63GHz as the states of the antenna are switched. In this design only two PIN diodes are used to achieve bandwidth reconfiguration and the same design is also tested by replacing the PIN diodes with Vanadium dioxide(VO2) switches to check their compatibility with the designed antenna and see if same results could be achieved with the same.
