Context: Adherence to sport-injury rehabilitation protocols may be pivotal in ensuring successful rehabilitation and return-to-play outcomes. Objectives: To investigate athletic trainers' perspectives related to the degree to which rehabilitation adherence is an issue in collegiate athletic training settings, gain insight from certified athletic trainers regarding the factors contributing to rehabilitation nonadherence (underadherence and overadherence), and ascertain views on the most effective means for promoting adherence. Design: Crosssectional, mixed methods. Setting: Collegiate athletic training in the United States. Participants: Certified athletic trainers (n = 479; 234 male, 245 female). A substantial issue in sporting professions today, including elite strength and conditioning is gender imbalance. Attitudes towards women’s roles are complex and institutionally entrenched, contributing to barriers to women’s success. While real issues still exist for today’s elite female strength and conditioners, murmurings of change are audible. Further research on why gender imbalance in strength and conditioning matters as well as the creation of a culture where women feel included and wanted is part of the solution. This research focuses on women leaders in strength and conditioning, their experiences, the barriers they perceive and their ways of overcoming them.

Gendered Leadership Expectations in Sport: Constructing Differences in Coaches

Aim: To examine the relationship between the perception of same gender coaches by male and female Iranian skaters and their sport achievement motivation and commitment. Participants: Fifty two female and forty two male skaters, age range 13 to 18 years, from the province of Isfahan in Iran. Materials: The following 3 questionnaires, tested for reliability and validity for the Iranian population and adapted for Farsi, were used: i) Pelletier, Fortier, Vallerand and Briere (2001) Interpersonal Behaviour Scale to measure social support of trainers, ii) Gill and Deeter (1988) Sport Orientation Questionnaire (SOQ) to measure achievement motivation, and iii) Scanlan, Simons, Carpenter, Schmidt and Keeler (1993) Sport Commitment Model to measure sport commitment. Procedure: The questionnaires were administered to participants in person by the first author after training sessions in sport stadiums. Results: There was a significant positive correlation between perceived coaches' social support and sport achievement motivation and commitment for both male and female participants. However, on all of the above measures females scored significantly more positive ratings than their male counterparts. Results of regression analyses conducted separately for males and females showed that relatedness support is the strongest predictor for sport achievement motivation and commitment for males, whereas autonomy support was the strongest predictor for sport commitment amongst females. Implications: These findings are of particular interest in understanding the impact of perceived coaching support for young male and female athletes, especially if coached exclusively by the same gender.

version of the Attitudes of Athletes toward Male versus Female Coaches Questionnaire (AAMFCQ; 23) A 2 x 2 multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) revealed that neither males nor females showed any preference for gender of hypothetical personal trainer (p > 005) although both males and females reported that a personal trainer of the opposite gender might make it harder to concentrate (p < 005) Previous research has reported a preference for male coaches/strength and conditioning coaches from both male and female athletes However, this study suggests that there is no such gender bias towards personal trainers in this population
