Concentrations of toxic heavy metals (cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb)) and major nutritional and trace elements (Ca, Mg, P, Cu, Fe, Mn, Se, Zn) were analyzed in the milk of Simmental (n = 20) and Holstein-Friesian (n = 20) cows from an organic farm. Elements were determined using inductively coupled plasma emission atomic spectrometry. The conducted research showed that the milk of Simmental cows was characterized by the more advantageous mineral composition and lower concentration of noxious heavy metals compared to the milk of Holstein-Friesian cows. In the milk of Simmental cows, significantly lower concentrations of Pb and Cd (P < 0.001) and Cu (P < 0.05) and significantly higher concentrations of Fe and Mg (P < 0.05) as well as nonsignificantly higher concentrations of Ca, Mn, and Se were found. In the milk of both breeds, very low Cu concentrations were recorded. The higher-than-recommended concentration of Pb in milk was also found. In the milk of both breeds, the significant positive correlations between concentrations of the following elements were observed: Pb–Cd, Pb–Se, Cd–Se, Cd–Mn, Zn–Cu, Zn–P, Ca–P, Ca–Mg, and Mg–P. The correlations between other elements within each of the analyzed breeds separately were also found.

Concentrations of toxic heavy metals and trace elements in raw milk of Simmental and Holstein-Friesian cows from organic farm

A study was conducted to determine the effects of copper (Cu) depletion by feeding diets high in either iron (Fe) or molybdenum (Mo) on performance and Cu status of beef cows and calves. Thirty-eight 2-yr-old beef heifers, entering the last one-third of gestation, were randomly assigned by expected calving date to one of four diets: 1) control (CON; corn silage-soybean meal-based diet, 4 mg of Cu/kg), 2) control + 600 mg of Fe (as FeCO3)/kg, 3) control + 5 mg of Mo (as Na2MoO4)/kg, and 4) control + 10 mg of Cu (as CuSO4)/kg. From d 28 until after the end of the calving season (d 125), heifers receiving supplemental Cu had higher (P < .05) plasma Cu levels and ceruloplasmin activities than heifers fed the other diets. By d 224, plasma Cu concentrations of heifers fed the CON and Fe diets had increased to levels similar to those observed in the Cu-supplemented heifers, whereas the Mo heifers exhibited the lowest (P < .05) plasma Cu of the four treatments from d 168 through the remainder of the 280-d trial. Plasma Cu concentrations and ceruloplasmin activities were greater (P < .05) in Cu-supplemented than in non-Cu-supplemented calves (diets 1, 2, and 3) from d 168 onward, and the Fe- and Mo-supplemented calves did not differ in either measurement at any time during the trial. Rate of gain did not differ among calves fed the CON, Fe- or Cu-supplemented diets, whereas the Mo-supplemented calves gained at a much slower (P < .05) rate.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Effect of chromium supplementation and copper status on glucose and lipid metabolism in Angus and Simmental beef cows

In Exp. 1, Simmental (n = 21) and Angus (n = 21) heifers, approximately 9 mo of age, were used in a 160-d study to determine the effect of dietary Cu on growth and Cu status. Two- or three-yr-old first-calf heifers (21 Angus and 21 Simmental) entering into their last trimester of pregnancy were used in Exp. 2 to estimate Cu requirements of the two breeds during gestation and early lactation. Treatments in both studies consisted of 0 (control), 7, or 14 mg of supplemental Cu (as CuSO4)/kg of DM. The control corn silage-based diets contained 6.4 and 4.4 mg of Cu/kg of DM in Exp. 1 and 2, respectively, and 1.2 mg of Mo/kg. Dietary Cu did not affect performance in either breed in Exp. 1. Copper supplementation generally did not affect plasma Cu concentrations in Angus heifers, but increased (P < 0.05) plasma Cu in Simmental heifers from d 37 until the end of Exp. 1. Final liver Cu concentrations were lower (P < 0.05) than initial concentrations in control Angus and Simmental heifers; however, liver Cu increased (P < 0.01) in Cu-supplemented heifers. In Exp. 2, Cu supplementation of the control diet increased (P < 0.05) plasma Cu during gestation and greatly increased (P < 0.01) liver Cu in both breeds. Calves born to cows not supplemented with Cu also had lower plasma Cu concentrations than Cu-supplemented calves by 73 d of age. In both studies, control Simmental heifers had lower (P < 0.05) plasma Cu concentrations than Angus on most sampling dates. When Cu was supplemented at 7 or 14 mg/kg of DM,few differences in plasma Cu concentrations were observed between breeds. Results suggest that Angus heifers have a lower minimal Cu requirement than Simmental. Based on liver Cu, the control diets containing 4.4 or 6.4 mg of Cu/kg of DM did not meet the Cu requirement of either breed during gestation and lactation or growth. Addition of 7 mg of Cu/kg of DM to the control diets met Cu requirements of both breeds.

Primary and secondary copper deficiency has been identified in most Canadian provinces. Research has been done investigating the environmental and dietary factors that influence dietary copper availability and the effect of deficient copper status on the health and production of cattle. Across Canada, a high percentage of forages and grains are marginal to deficient in copper. In certain regions, high sulphates in the water and/or high molybdenum concentrations in the feed decrease dietary copper availability. The value of various oral and parenteral copper supplements in the treatment and prevention of copper deficiency is discussed.

The liver copper concentration of the bovine fetus and the hepatic and plasma copper concentrations of its dam during the first trimester of pregnancy were studied. The effect of the dam's dietary copper intake, age, sire breed and stage of pregnancy on her copper status and that of her fetus was also investigated. Simmental sired heifers had the lowest plasma copper concentration. The younger cows (two, three and four years) had significantly lower liver copper concentration than the older cows (six and seven years). The bovine fetal liver copper concentration was approximately 3.1 mmol/g DM and was not affected by dam's age, breed, stage of pregnancy, or copper status.
