The application of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) in different types of commodity thermoplastic composites (polyethylene, polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)) have been discussed in terms of mechanical properties, morphologies and thermal properties. In addition, engineering thermoplastics such as acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), polyamides and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH) and their composites added with APP and other additives were analyzed as well. It was suggested that improvement of mechanical properties and morphologies of the thermoplastic composites could be made possible with appropriate amount of APP and other additives such as montmorillonite (MMT), pentaerythritol (PER) and different types of layered double hydroxide (LDH). Furthermore, thermal properties such as limiting oxygen index (LOI) values together with cone calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) performance could be enhanced through optimum combination of APP, PER and melamine which functions as intumescent flame retardant (IFR).

Developments in flame retardants for heat and fire resistant textiles—the role of char formation and intumescence

In this work, we studied the mechanism of the fire retardancy of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) in polyurethane (PU). Indeed, according to the limiting oxygen index test, the efficiency of APP in PU coating was proven. On the one hand, thermogravimetric analyses showed that the addition of APP to PU accelerates the decomposition of the matrix but leads to an increase in the amount of high-temperature residue, under an oxidative or inert atmosphere. This stabilized residue acts as a protective thermal barrier during the intumescence-fire retardancy process. On the other hand, spectroscopic analysis of the charring materials using infrared spectroscopy, MAS NMR of the solid state, and ESR enables better understanding of the carbonization process and, consequently, of the intumescence phenomenon. It has been shown that the char resulting from PU consists of an aromatic carbonaceous structure which condenses and oxidizes at high temperature. In the presence of APP, a reaction between the additive and the polymer occurs, which leads to the formation of a phosphocarbonaceous polyaromatic structure. Moreover, this char is strongly paramagnetic. The presence of large radical species, such as a polyaromatic macromolecule trapping free radicals, was demonstrated. Both of these characteristics help to explain the fire-retardant performance of PU/APP.

Mechanism of fire retardancy of polyurethanes using ammonium polyphosphate

Synthesis and characterization of a novel organic-inorganic hybrid char-forming agent and its flame-retardant application in polypropylene composites

A novel intumescent gel-silica/ammonium polyphosphate core-shell flame retardant (MCAPP), which contains silicon, phosphorus, and nitrogen, has been prepared by in situ polymerization. The structure of MCAPP was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The properties of MCAPP were investigated by water solubility, hydrophilicity, and morphological determination. The flame retardancy and thermal stability of polyurethane (PU) composite with MCAPP were evaluated by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 test, cone calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results showed that MCAPP could decrease the heat release rate (HRR) and increase the thermal stability of PU materials greatly. Preparation of gel‐silica/ammonium polyphosphate core‐shell flame retardant and properties of polyurethane composites

Ammonium polyphosphate is shown to be an effective flame retardant for homopolymeric and selected fibre‐forming copolymers of acrylonitrile. Compared with other phosphates and phosphorus‐containing species, it significantly increases both limiting oxygen index and char levels. The mechanism of retardancy is shown to be both physical and chemical in character. When heated to 300°C, the polyphosphate melts and converts to polyphosphoric acid which acts as a physical barrier to surface polymer oxidation and promotes nucleophilic oligomerization of pendant, adjacent nitrile groups. A reduction in the activation energy of this first stage of acrylic polymer degradation suggests that the favoured decomposition route gives rise via oligomerization to char‐promoting precursors. Char analyses indicate an empirical formula of C30H13N7P2, which compares favourably with that of a proposed phosphorylated, polynuclear, aromatic heterocyclic structure.
