Signatures of B0s-B−0s mixings in pp and e+e− collisions

Inclusive psi production in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at 29 GeV has been measured with the Mark II detector. The psi cross section is found to be 1.1 +- 0.5 +- 0.4 pb. After subtraction of the expected contribution from B decay, an upper limit of 0.02sigma/sub ..mu..//sub ..mu../ is obtained for other sources of psi production.

Observation of psi production in e+e- annihilation at 29 GeV.

Evidence for pair production of a new particle consistent with the standard-model top quark has been reported recently by groups studying proton-antiproton collisions at 1.8 TeV center-of-mass energy at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. This paper both reviews the history of the search for the top quark in electron-positron and proton-antiproton collisions and reports on a number of precise electroweak measurements and the value of the top-quark mass that can be extracted from them. Within the context of the standard model, the authors review the theoretical predictions for top-quark production and the dominant backgrounds. They describe the collider and the detectors that were used to measure the pair-production process and the data from which the existence of the top quark is evinced. Finally, they suggest possible measurements that could be made in the future with more data, measurements that would confirm the nature of this particle, the details of its production in hadron collisions, and its decay properties. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

The discovery of the top quark

The top quark is the most massive fundamental particle of the Standard Model of particle physics, and as the only quark to decay before hadronising gives a unique opportunity for studying QCD, the theory of the strong interaction. In this thesis, we study the tt production cross-section as a function of several variables related to the produced top quarks. This thesis presents variables defined after the hadronisation of the top quark, and so are mostly independent of its theoretical description, unlike previous results which are corrected to the partonic variables. Using the ATLAS detector at the LHC, the measurements are performed for √s = 7 TeV proton–proton collisions. The measurements are sensitive to various parameters entering the description of top quark production, including the Parton Distribution Functions, and so have good potential to be used in furthering our understanding of proton collision physics and for future tunings of the models used in describing the physics.

Differential top pair production cross-section measurements at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

Results are presented on a measurement of the t (t) over bar pair production cross section in p (p) over bar collisions at roots=1.8 TeV from nine independent decay channels. The data were collected by the D empty set experiment during the 1992-1996 run of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. A total of 80 candidate events is observed with an expected background of 38.8+/-3.3 events. For a top quark mass of 172.1 GeV/c(2), the measured cross section is 5.69+/-1.21(stat)+/-1.04(syst) pb.
