Carbon quantum dots (CQDs), also known as carbon dots (CDs), are novel zero-dimensional fluorescent carbon-based nanomaterials. CQDs have attracted enormous attention around the world because of their excellent optical properties as well as water solubility, biocompatibility, low toxicity, eco-friendliness, and simple synthesis routes. CQDs have numerous applications in bioimaging, biosensing, chemical sensing, nanomedicine, solar cells, drug delivery, and light-emitting diodes. In this review paper, the structure of CQDs, their physical and chemical properties, their synthesis approach, and their application as a catalyst in the synthesis of multisubstituted 4H pyran, in azide-alkyne cycloadditions, in the degradation of levofloxacin, in the selective oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes, in the removal of Rhodamine B, as H-bond catalysis in Aldol condensations, in cyclohexane oxidation, in intrinsic peroxidase-mimetic enzyme activity, in the selective oxidation of amines and alcohols, and in the ring opening of epoxides are discussed. Finally, we also discuss the future challenges in this research field. We hope this review paper will open a new channel for the application of CQDs as a catalyst in organic synthesis.

Carbon Quantum Dots: Synthesis, Structure, Properties, and Catalytic Applications for Organic Synthesis

Green Hydrogen (GH) is increasingly recognized as a viable solution in the United States (US) for meeting energy demands, achieving net zero emissions by 2050, and mitigating the intermittent nature of renewable sources such as wind and solar. This review paper identifies and examines three crucial research areas concerning GH. Despite significant federal, state, and business investment in the development of hydrogen technology, numerous questions have remained unanswered including economic viability, social acceptance, and policies and regulations. In comparison to the US, Europe, and Asia have taken a lead role in studying the social and regulatory aspects of GH. The study shows limited focus on social acceptance, and the absence of dedicated policies and regulations for hydrogen. The US lacks coordinated policies for GH and is blended with natural gas. The literature shows that the relationship between economics, social sciences, and policies and regulations are intrinsic. The success of GH in the US will require massive investments, public and private collaboration, research on social sciences, and regulatory support. Hence, the GH rollout will bridge the energy transition, and climate and development targets which guide future industrial, government and public decisions. 

Economic, social, and regulatory challenges of green hydrogen production and utilization in the US: A review

To reduce the preparation cost of high-purity hydrogen, it is necessary to search suitable non-precious metal catalysts with high activity and robust stability. Herein, two means (heteroatom-doping and the heterostructure construction) were adopted together to improve the dual-function activity of NiFe LDH which was widely used in water electrolysis. Mo doped NiFe LDH nanoflowers were firstly generated by hydrothermal reaction, and then NiSx was modified on the petals via electrodeposition. Finally, the obtained NF/Mo-NiFe LDH/NiSx with large electrochemical active area exhibits the expected electrochemical performance with the overpotential at 100 mA cm−2 of 169 and 249 mV for hydrogen evolution (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) respectively. Assembling NF/Mo-NiFe LDH/NiSx into a two-electrode device for the integral water electrolysis, it just requires a cell voltage of 1.69 V to drive a current density of 100 mA cm−2, and keeps stable after 50-hour continuous operation in 1.0 M KOH. Mo-doping not only regulates the electronic structure of the transition metals and reduces the energy barrier of HER intermediates, but also facilitates the generation of reactive sites for OER. Meanwhile, the construction of heterointerface ensures the synergism between NiSx and Mo-NiFe LDH and accelerates the electron transfer across interfaces, thus enhancing the bifunctional performance.

Catalytic hydrogenation plays an important role in the industrial production of fine chemicals. Herein, we report a Co-doped MoS2 and CoS2 composite with a coupling interface and successfully apply it for the chemoselective hydrogenation of p-chloronitrobenzene to p-chloroaniline. The target catalyst 0.5CoMoS has ∼100% conversion and ∼100% selectivity. Experiments and theoretical calculations reveal that CoS2 is more favorable for adsorbing and activating H2 and provides active hydrogen (Ha) to Co-doped MoS2 by the coupling interface. By matching the production and consumption rates of Ha, the maximization of the reaction yield was achieved. This work may promote the study of MoS2-based catalysts for chemoselective hydrogenation.
