Crystals present a uniquely simple environment for the investigation of strong electromagnetic fields. When energetic charged particles are incident on crystals close to major crystallographic directions, their electromagnetic interactions depend crucially on the kinematic conditions. The coherence of the crystalline field can produce very strong electric fields in the rest frame of the particle, exceeding the so-called Schwinger field or quantum critical field. In that domain, the radiation emission takes a substantial part of the electron energy and the ``formation zone'' changes character. In this review the theory appropriate to the different kinematics domains is described, concentrating on the effects occurring at extreme fields. Properties discussed include strong field synchrotron radiation, channeling radiation, bremsstrahlung, and photon interactions. Applications are given to radiation sources, bending of particle beams, and sources of polarized GeV photons.

In this paper we very briefly review the method and the history of colliders, discuss in detail the developments over the past two decades and the directions of the R and D toward near future colliders which are currently being explored. Finally, we make an attempt to look beyond the current horizon and outline the changes in the paradigm required for the next breakthroughs.

Since the initial development of charged particle colliders in the middle of the 20th century, these advanced scientific instruments have been at the forefront of scientific discoveries in high energy physics over the past 60 years. Collider accelerator technology and beam physics have progressed immensely and modern facilities now operate at energies and luminosities many orders of magnitude greater than the pioneering colliders of the early 1960s. In addition, the field of colliders remains extremely dynamic and continues to develop many innovative approaches. Indeed, several novel concepts are currently being considered for designing and constructing even more powerful future colliders. In this paper, we first review the colliding beam method and the history of colliders, and then present, in detail, the major achievements of operational machines and the key features of near-term collider projects that are currently under development. We conclude with an analysis of numerous proposals and studies for far-future colliders. The evaluation of their respective potentials reveals tantalizing prospects for further significant breakthroughs in the collider field.

Modern and Future Colliders

An ultimate linac structure is realized by an appropriate crystal lattice (superlattice) that serves as a ''soft'' irised waveguide for x rays. High-energy (--40 keV) X rays are injected into the crystal at the Bragg angle to cause Bormann anomalous transmission, yielding slow-wave accelerating fields. Particles (e.g., muons) are channeled along the crystal axis.
