The demanding requirements of new real-time and mobile multimedia group-based applications (e.g. IPTV and video-conferencing) motivates the research for novel and efficient network architectures, able to fulfil service requirements and increase user experience. Multicast, despite its scalability issues, is the most suitable network technology for the delivery of multiparty content. Context-awareness is taken as a key feature in Next Generation Networks, enabling a management framework with a more comprehensive knowledge of the network, application and user. The challenge is how to use the available knowledge towards service personalization and network efficiency. This paper presents and evaluates an architecture that aims to provide personalized session content delivery to multiple mobile users, integrating different access and transport technologies. The architecture relies on an end-to-end context-aware communication framework able to dynamically react and adapt to context changes, through session and network reconfiguration. Our focus is on the transport network part, addressing a new level of scalable multiparty content delivery through the concepts of abstract multiparty trees and overlay nodes. The results show that the concept of abstract trees reduces the network reconfiguration complexity while still guaranteeing end-to-end QoS.

Multiparty Seamless Transport

Heterogeneity is seen as the prevailing feature in Next Generation Networks, requiring the development of novel solutions to overcome the challenges posed by future communication environments. Thus, the major goal is to transform the diversity into an opportunity to increase user experience, which can be achieved through context-awareness. Considering this, and given the increasing demand for group-based multimedia services, this chapter focuses on providing an effective multimedia group communication in heterogeneous environments, developing an architecture driven by the available context information. It introduces a hierarchical architecture that employs the concept of abstract trees to control multiparty content distribution in a scalable way, being the trees built based on intelligent network selection schemes fed by available context information. The chapter’s ultimate goal is to find the best compromise between service personalization and resources optimization, developing an architecture flexible enough to properly react to context changes. Context-Aware Delivery of Multi-Party Communications: Access and Core Network Selection

With the rapidly increasing interest of citizens and businesses in multimedia group services, personalization, context- awareness and seamless mobility, the communication can no longer be limited to high speed network or devices. In future scenarios, context-aware services and multicasting will together drive a new trend, since context-awareness can exploit situations in which users share the same interests and request similar services, increasing the effectiveness of session and network control. However, context-aware networks impose several challenges: any change to context, such as, location, mobility, velocity, preferences, presence, etc., can change the overall services and network environments, requiring completely restructuring of the network and multicast sessions in a very dynamic way. This dynamicity imposes scalability problems in current networks. In this paper, we present an initial future Internet architecture for context-aware network and service control, which enables the support of context-aware users and services, seamless reacting to the context changes with minimal impacts to the services and multicast control. For this purpose, we provide a network that is able to interact with context-based services, choose and change the session and network characteristics based on the context, both for the environment, user, network, and sessions. To address the dynamicity of the network, we provide the support of multicast abstract transport trees able to abstract the network changes to the running sessions transport, and limiting the impact of all the context dynamics in the user sessions.

Multimedia services are rapidly growing in interest with the increase of available bandwidth on core and mobile technologies. There is a business opportunity for both adaptability and personalization of services centralized in users and their surrounding environment. Context Awareness requires the network to support mechanisms that are able to get information from the user situation as location, activity, presence, velocity, preferences, surrounding noise, etc., and triggering session modification and network control mechanisms. Context awareness provides a new trend in pervasiveness since it allows a full, but unconscious interaction between users, operators and service providers. This paper presents the results, from simulation and demonstrator implementation, of an architecture that enables context-aware and personalized multiparty multimedia content delivery, independently of the underlying access and transport technologies.

Pervasive multiparty delivery framework for ubiquitous multimedia services

This paper analyses the current developments in terms of telecommunication networks design and investigates their limits concerning the control and management of multicast flows. An innovative approach is then introduced to extend the current architectures, so far mainly focused on unicast services, to handle multicast and broadcast services in a heterogeneous networks environment. The proposed solution aims at guaranteeing End-to-End QoS, efficiently handling the underlying network resources and integrating the emerging broadcast technologies in both intra and inter-domain scenarios. The paper is centered on the results achieved within the IST/FP6 Integrated Project DAIDALOS II (Designing Advanced network Interfaces for the Delivery and Administration of Location independent, Optimized personal Services ).
