Adopting conservation tillage practices such as zero tillage can enhance soil quality, compared with conventional tillage practices that disrupt soil structure. The benefits of maintaining soil structure through no tillage typically result in improved biological processes and increased microbial biodiversity. Rhizobia are considered here as an indicator for soil quality, as they are ubiquitous, present in high populations in many soils, rapidly respond to soil changes, and are crucial for legume productivity. The process of symbiotic nitrogen fixation, whereby rhizobia form a symbiotic association with leguminous plants and fix atmospheric nitrogen gas, can substantially improve agricultural system as, it has how environmental and economic costs for nitrogen supply. Tillage methods affect many soil characteristics such as aeration, structure, temperature and water use, all of which affect the microbial composition, nitrogen fixation and nodulation. This review systematically summarizes the effect of tillage systems such as conventional tillage and minimum tillage systems on nitrogen fixation by legumes. We identify that conservation tillage typically enhances nodulation and nitrogen fixation, through increased soil moisture retention and soil temperature, and increased soil microbial biomass. However, conservation tillage can lead to a reduction in soil pH and increased soil compaction, which can reduce nodulation.

Do tillage systems influence nitrogen fixation in legumes? A review

Onion cultivation in pots is a solution of limited land in urban areas. Nevertheless, the onion productivity is constrained by the quality of planting media. The utilization of rabbit manure is an alternative to improve the quality of planting media. This study was aimed to determine the effect of rabbit manure level in the planting media on the growth and yield of onion, as well as the effect of rabbit manure on planting media quality. The method used was a completely randomized design with one factor and 12 replications. The treatment was rabbit manure level on growth media i.e. 0%; 25%; 50%; 75%; and 100%. Parameters measured were leaf lenght, number of leafss, diameter and weight of bulbs, pH of planting media, Cation exchange capacity (CEC), Sodium, Phosphor and Potassium. The results showed that 25%-50% rabbit manure in planting media produced the best on leaf lenght, number of leafs, diameter of bulbs, and weight of bulbs. The application of rabbit manure on ultisol soil media was able to increase pH, nitrogen, phosphorus, and cation exchange capacity, vice versa decreased the content Potassium.

Sci., 26 (2), 365–374 This study is devoted to consideration of the practical aspect of atmospheric nitrogen biological fixation by soybean plants. This fixation is considered in terms of physiological-biochemical processes taking place at binding the inert nitrogen molecule in nitrogenous compounds accessible to plants. Searching the ways of intensifying the process of nitrogen fixation to obtain maximal yields of high-quality protein products appears to be an important practical task. It has been demonstrated that the role of soil tillage practices connected with the possibilities of soybean symbiotic nitrogen fixation, being among many factors capable of affecting this process, has not been sufficiently studied. To study effect of soil tillage and seed inoculation on soybean productivity field trials during the period from 2016 to 2018 were conducted. The following main soil treatment techniques were used: deep tillage (20–22 cm), shallow tillage of two types: up to 14–16 cm and to 12–14 cm depth. Various types of cultivators forming different degree of soil dispersity by its crumbling, fluffing, partial mixing, and also flattening the field surface were used for soil shallow tillage. It was established that inoculated soybean plants are able to uptake the maximal quantity of fixed nitrogen181.2 kg/ha under shallow tillage (12–14 cm), flattened and moderately compacted soil surface. Obtaining the highest soybean yield of 2.42 t/ha as compared with other soil tillage practices as shallow tillage (14–16 cm) and deep tillage under which the yields were 2.24 and 2.01 t/ha, respectively, was the result of such farm practices.

The effect of soil tillage on symbiotic activity of soybean crops.

In Mizoram, northeast India, Sloping Agricultural Land Technology (SALT) has been a prominent form of agriculture after shifting cultivation, with Tephrosia candida (Roxb.) DC hedge row commonly used. The study was designed to assess the soil physicochemical properties and fine root biomass in bulk root zone (BRZ) and sparse root zone (SRZ), along with the rates of root exudation in Tephrosia candida (Roxb.) DC planted at Botanical garden of Mizoram University. The soil properties (soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, exchangeable potassium, NH4-N and NO3-N) and fine root biomass were significantly higher in upper (0-15 cm) and lower soil depth (15-30 cm) of BRZ compared to SRZ. Total fine root biomass at upper and lower depths were 129 g m-2 and 48 g m-2, respectively in BRZ which were six fold greater than the values in SRZ. The N-mineralization rate was also higher in BRZ. The annual C exudation rate in T. candida was 157 mg C g-1 yr-1 and the mean total annual C flux in BRZ and SRZ were 9 g C m-2 yr- 1 and 1.7 g C m-2 yr-1 respectively, to a depth of 30 cm. Results indicated that the T. candida significantly enhanced soil nutrients in BRZ through greater exudation of C in the vicinity of roots, which fueled microbial growth. This indicates significant role of the species in maintaining the soil health in the region.

Ultisol soil is a marginal soil commonly used for palm oil cultivation in Indonesia, its very potential for cultivation of horticulture crops. The utilization of ultisol soil can be done with adding compost with certain proportions. The research aimed to know best proportion of ultisol soil and compost, and proportion of water concentration, and its relationship with fresh and dry weight of horticulture crops . The research was divided 3 steps. The first, mixed ultisol soil and compost with certain proportion and flooding until steady. The second, watering with different concentration to soil mixture. The last, studied its relationship with fresh and dry weight of crops. The result show that physical properties and nutrient content of ultisol soil was increasing with adding compost. SC4 (70% soil and 30% compost) is the best composition to soil mixture. Watering with different concentration show that trend decreased from reference and the bulk density and porosity decreased not significantly at the significant level ∝ = 0.05. Watering affect mass of pakcoynot significantly at the significant level ∝ = 0.05. Hence, ultisol soil was a potential marginal soil to utilizing as a media for cultivating horticulture crops.
