This and the subsequent papers in this special issue set out the contours of Marxian urban political ecology and call for greater research attention to a neglected field of critical research that, given its political importance, requires urgent attention. Notwithstanding the important contributions of other critical perspectives on urban ecology, Marxist urban political ecology provides an integrated and relational approach that helps untangle the interconnected economic, political, social and ecological processes that together go to form highly uneven and deeply unjust urban landscapes. Because the power-laden socioecological relations that shape the formation of urban environments constantly shift between groups of actors and scales, historical-geographical insights into these ever-changing urban configurations are necessary for the sake of considering the future of radical political-ecological urban strategies. The social production of urban environments is gaining recognition within radical and historical-materialist geography. The political programme, then, of urban political ecology is to enhance the democratic content of socioenvironmental construction by identifying the strategies through which a more equitable distribution of social power and a more inclusive mode of environmental production can be achieved.

Indicators for the assessment of social resilience in flood-affected communities - A text mining-based methodology

This article proposes the design of an automatic classifier using the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) along with machine learning techniques for identifying the five most important types of events of the Ubinas volcano, the most active volcano in Peru. The proposed method uses attributes from temporal, spectral, and cepstral domains, extracted from the EMD of the signals, as well as a set of preprocessing and instrument correction techniques. Due to the fact that multichannel sensors are currently being installed in seismic networks worldwide, the proposed approach uses a multichannel sensor to perform the classification, contrary to the usual approach of the literature of using a single channel. The presented method is scalable to use data from multiple stations with one or more channels. The principal component analysis method is applied to reduce the dimensionality of the feature vector and the supervised classification is carried out by means of several machine learning algorithms, the support vector machine providing the best results. The presented investigation was tested with a large database that has a considerable number of explosion events, measured at the Ubinas volcano, located in Arequipa, Peru. The proposed classification system achieved a success rate of more than 90%.

Automatic Multichannel Volcano-Seismic Classification Using Machine Learning and EMD

Disasters are associated strongly with forced migration. Indeed, migration is a standard survival strategy for those facing disruptions of this kind. Such is the case with Mt. Merapi, Indonesia, where a series of eruptions occurred in 2010. Mechanisms related to forced migration in such scenarios are fairly well understood, yet it remains less clear what factors may influence return migration. Given local interest in facilitating resettlement out of hazardous areas as a means of risk reduction, our objective in this study is to explore the extent to which recovery aid may create incentives for households to move on rather than move home. Specifically, we explore whether the influence of recovery aid varied by whether it was: financial vs. another type of aid; provided by a government agency or NGO versus a social network; and/or distributed with other types of recovery aid. We use data from a cross-sectional pilot study and multinomial logistic regression models to explore the influence of aid on migration status. Of the various forms of aid considered, financial recovery aid was consistently associated with moving on. The combination of financial recovery aid with remittances resulted in an association with having moved on that was even stronger than just receiving financial recovery aid. Ultimately, analyses of “aid packages” suggest that a combination of aid was relatively more effective in fostering resettlement, suggesting that while other forms of aid may not have been sufficient to increase resettlement by themselves, they may enhance the effect of financial recovery aid.

Vulnerability and risk assessment (VRA) is increasingly becoming more popular as a tool to assess and evaluate the likelihood and externalities that are faced by urban areas because of environmental hazards and climate change. However, urban dynamics are increasingly putting communities in a vulnerable/riskier situation, calling for a more comprehensive and inter-disciplinary approach. Urban Political Ecology (UPE) was utilized as a framework to reflect upon the empirical findings and literature review with two urban villages (kelurahan) in Bandar Lampung, Indonesia—Kangkung and Kota Karang—as case studies. We argue that the existing VRA is not adequate to address fundamental issues of environmental hazards and climate change. Different aspects, such as the city’s metabolism of human-nature interaction, contribute to producing vulnerability and need to be taken into account. This research also recommends that future urban disaster governance should incorporate the production and alteration of (social) vulnerability by considering spatial and temporal dimensions in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation. Penilaian kerentanan dan risiko (VRA) semakin populer sebagai alat untuk menilai dan mengevaluasi kemungkinan dan eksternalitas yang dihadapi oleh daerah perkotaan karena bahaya lingkungan dan perubahan iklim. Namun, dinamika perkotaan dari waktu ke waktu menempatkan masyarakat dalam situasi yang rentan/berisiko, sehingga menyerukan pendekatan yang lebih komprehensif dan antar-disiplin. Kami memobilisasi Ekologi Politik Perkotaan (PDU) digunakan sebagai kerangka kerja untuk merefleksikan temuan empiris dan tinjauan literatur melalui dua desa perkotaan (kelurahan) di Bandar Lampung, Indonesia—Kangkung dan Kota Karang—sebagai studi kasus. Kami berpendapat bahwa penilaian kerentanan dan risiko yang saat ini ada tidak memadai untuk menangani masalah-masalah inti dari bahaya-bahaya lingkungan dan perubahan iklim. Aspek-aspek yang berbeda, seperti metabolisme kota dari interaksi manusia-alam, berkontribusi untuk menghasilkan kerentanan, yang perlu diperhitungkan juga. Penelitian ini juga merekomendasikan bahwa tata kelola bencana perkotaan masa depan harus memasukan bagaimana produksi dan perubahan  kerentanan (sosial) dengan mempertimbangkan dimensi spasial dan temporal dalam pengurangan risiko bencana dan adaptasi perubahan iklim.
