High-energy photon interactions are discussed in terms of the hadronic structure of the photon, which is expressed by means of a formulation which is akin to, but somewhat more general than, vector-meson-dominance or specific generalized vector-dominance models. Experiments which demonstrate and yield information about this hadronic structure are discussed critically, and the resulting information is carefully evaluated. Special attention is paid to diffractive processes such as the photoproduction of vector mesons and to photon shadowing effects on nuclei. Relationships to other views of photon interactions, such as the parton model and the space-time description, are also discussed; these views are seen to complement the hadronic structure picture rather than to be in conflict. The general overview is that there is ample evidence which shows that the photon's hadronic structure plays a significant role in its interactions. What further work would most significantly enhance the understanding of the hadronic structure of the photon is also pointed out.

Photoproduction reactions occur when the electromagnetic field of a relativistic heavy ion interacts with another heavy ion The STAR Collaboration presents a measurement of rho(0) and direct pi(+)pi(-) photoproduction in ultraperipheral relativistic heavy ion collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV We observe both exclusive photoproduction and photoproduction accompanied by mutual Coulomb excitation We find a coherent cross section of sigma(AuAu -> Au*Au*rho(0)) = 530 +/- 19(stat) +/- 57(syst) mb, in accord with theoretical calculations based on a Glauber approach, but considerably below the predictions of a color dipole model The rho 0 transverse momentum spectrum (p(T)(2)) is fit by a double exponential curve including both coherent and incoherent coupling to the target nucleus; we find sigma(inc)/sigma(coh) = 029 +/- 003 (stat) +/- 008 (syst) The ratio of direct pi(+)pi(-) to rho(0) production is comparable to that observed in gamma(p) collisions at HERA and appears to be independent of photon energy Finally, the measured rho(0) spin helicity matrix elements agree within errors with the expected s-channel helicity conservation

Total Photoabsorption Cross Sections up to 18 GeV and the Nature of Photon Interactions

We present results of measurements on photoproduction of ρ mesons. Analysis of 106 measured ρ events in a four-dimensional data matrix dσ(A, m, p, t⊥)dΩdm with dimensions 14×20×10×20 yields precise information on nuclear density distributions for ρ production. We obtain for the Woods-Saxon radii R(A)=(1.12±0.02)A13 and, using the vector dominance model, σρN=26.7±2.0 mb and γρ24π=0.57±0.10.

Photoproduction of Neutral Rho Mesons from Complex Nuclei

We have measured the absolute differential cross section for photo- production of neutral rho mesons from complex nuclei at a photon energy of 8.8 BeV. Using a two-parameter optical model, we have de- duced a value for the total rho-nucleon cross section of (30 f i) mb. Application of the Vector Dominance Model results in a value for the 'rho photon coupling of yi /47r = 1.1 * 0.2.
