Introduction to zeolite science and practice

Electronic waste plastics (e-waste plastics) have been one of the emerging and fastest-growing waste streams due to the increasing number of generation in waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). Given that brominated flame retardant (BFR) materials in e-waste plastics have been the major impediment for recycling treatment, chemical recycling has been proposed as an environmentally friendly method of recycling e-waste plastics for clean fuels production or chemical feedstocks. This paper summarized the current techniques of BFR-plastics recycling with a view to solving energy crisis and the environmental degradation of BFR-plastics. Emphasis was paid on the recent chemical treatment of BFR-plastics, including pyrolysis, co-pyrolysis and catalytic cracking, which are yet to be completely feasible in conversion of BFR-plastics for clean fuels production. Hydrothermal treatment is regarded as a novel high-efficiency technology to recycle BFR-plastics, which can be a potential process for the in situ debromination of oil products. An advanced chemical recycling technique, pyrolysis-catalytic upgrading process, is highlighted. The recycling route of pyrolyzing BFR-plastics prior to catalytic upgrading was intended to obtain high quantity oils, and then the upgrading process of pyrolysis oils was conducted by means of catalytic hydrodebromination with the aim of obtaining bromine-free oils for commercial applications. In short, the integration of pyrolysis with catalytic upgrading process can provide significant economic and environmental options in conversion of e-waste plastics into useful and high-value materials. Further investigations are required to develop the pyrolysis-catalytic upgrading process to become sustainable and commercially viable for clean fuels production.

Some efforts made to date in curbing greenhouse gases from the transportation sector have focused on the production of biofuels. Biomass derived oils have advantages that outweigh their flaws as fuels. Petroleum range hydrocarbons can be produced via secondary processing of bio-oils. Feedstock type and availability, catalyst choice and operating conditions have a significant influence on the potentials of biomass as a feedstock for petroleum Range hydrocarbons. Despite numerous works done, it is noted that more research is needed towards commercialising biomass conversion techniques with the view to producing petroleum range hydrocarbon and biomass like algae and palm oil have been seen to be very promising sources of biofuels.

Bio-oil as a potential source of petroleum range fuels

Jatropha oil was cracked over micoporous catalysts, such as HY, HZSM-5, and HMordenite, at the optimized conditions obtained over Hβ towards cracking of jatropha oil. The synthesized catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analyzer, inductively coupled plasma, and temperature programmed desorption techniques. Among the microporous materials, HZSM-5 catalyst was found to be the best in terms of conversion (62%), selectivity towards green gasoline (50%), and less coke formation (0.8%) in the cracking of jatropha oil. Cracking of other oils, such as castor, neem, and pongamia, under the optimized conditions resulted in 82% conversion of castor oil; however, higher selectivity towards green gasoline (49%) was obtained in the cracking of pongamia oil.

The present study reports the synthesis; characterization by X-ray diffraction, Brunauer, Emmett and Teller surface area analyzer, inductively coupled plasma, and temperature programmed desorption techniques of Hβ catalyst; and its catalytic cracking activity towards jatropha oil using a fixed bed flow reactor. The catalytic reaction parameters, such as influence of temperature (400–500°C), weight hourly space velocity (3.8–6.2 h−1), and time of reaction (1–4 h) on percentage conversion of jatropha oil and percentage yield of bio liquid products were studied and optimized over Hβ. Under the optimized conditions, Hβ showed 48% conversion and 30, 45, and 25% selectivities toward green gasoline, green kerosene, and green diesel, respectively.
