Energy levels of A = 21−44 nuclei (V)

The $^{27}\mathrm{Al}$(p,${\mathrm{p}}_{0}$), (p,${\mathrm{p}}_{1}$), (p,${\mathrm{p}}_{2}$), (p,${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{0}$), and (p,${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{1}$) excitation functions were measured at 90\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}, 105\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}, 135\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}, and 160\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} in the range ${E}_{\mathrm{p}}=1.85\ensuremath{-}3.05$ MeV with an overall resolution of 350-400 eV full width at half maximum. Resonance parameters were extracted for 73 resonances with a multilevel, multichannel $R$-matrix analysis code; these parameters include resonance energy, total angular momentum, partial widths, and channel spin and orbital angular momentum mixing ratios. Eight analog states were identified, and the Coulomb displacement energies and spectroscopic factors were calculated. The values of the $s$-wave strength functions for $J=2 \mathrm{and} 3$ are ${S}_{J=2}=0.042$ and ${S}_{J=3}=0.012$. The spectroscopic strengths of the ${J}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}={4}^{\ensuremath{-}}, {5}^{\ensuremath{-}}, \mathrm{and} {6}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ particle-hole states are presented and compared with other results.

One class of dark matter candidates, the Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), has been predicted in many particle physics theories. Direct detection experiments using dual- phase liquid noble element detectors report the best sensitivities to the detection of the dark matter particles. The next generation direct detection experiments using the same technology, are actively been built and expected to give a factor of 100 improvement on the current best sensitivity.This thesis discusses the measurement of nuclear recoils in a dual-phase liquid argon detector using a bunched neutron beam generated by linear accelerator facility at accelerator laboratory in Notre Dame University. Nuclear recoils of en- ergy ranging from 10.8 keVnr to 49.9 keVnr are measured under different drift field configurations. An electric field quenching on nuclear recoils in liquid argon is dis- covered and quantified for the first time. This quenching effect is also found to be drift field and recoil energy dependent. By varying the drift field amplitude from 100 V/cm to 1000 V/cm for each nuclear recoil energy, the quenching effect are measured as a function of nuclear recoil energy and drift field amplitude. Results from this measurement is used in the direct dark matter detection experiment to calculate the final sensitivity of direct dark matter search.A separate work on the optimization of detector design for the XENON1T detector is also discussed in detail. Finite element simulation tool is used to design and optimize the electric field in XENON1T time projection chamber. As part of the design of XENON1T detector, electron transparency across metal grids of different geometrical configurations are also studied.

Direct Search for Dark Matter by Using Dual-phase Liquid Xenon Detector and Measurement of Nuclear Recoils in Liquid Argon

The decay schemes have been studied for gamma-rays from the (p, γ) reaction on27Al at the resonancesEP=1588 and 2044 keV and on45Sc at the resonancesEP=1026, 1047 and 1377 keV. Angular distributions are measured for several primary gamma-rays to assign the spin of the resonances atEP=1588, 1799, 2044 and 2198 keV in the27Al(p, γ)28Si reaction and atEP=1026 and 1377 keV in the45Sc(p, γ)46Ti reaction.

High resolution gamma-ray spectra have been measured from the27Al (p,γ)28Si reaction for the resonances atE
 p=2·482, 2·511 and 2·735 MeV at ϑ
 pγ=0°, 30°, 55° and 90° using a Ge (Li) gamma spectrometer. From the spectra and the angular distributions the properties of the resonance states have been obtained. These states are the isobaric analogues of the levels at 4·69, 4·75 and 4·93MeV levels respectively in the parent nucleus A28l.
