Impact of fly ash incorporation in soil systems.

Upland rice also known as aerobic rice is mainly grown in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Brazil is the largest producer of upland rice in the world. At world level, average yield of this crop is less than 2000 kg ha−1. The important yield limiting factors are water stress, mineral stress, diseases, insects and weeds. To improve and/or stabilize yield, these yield limiting factors should be alleviated. Research data related to yield limiting factors are scarce and much work is needed to improve upland rice yield under different agroecosystems. In this paper some basic principles to improve yield of this important crop with special reference to water and nutrient management, control of diseases, insects, weeds, and erosion, maintenance of organic matter and crop rotation are suggested. The basic principles to increase yield are similar for different ecosystems, although the technological packages based on these principles vary depending on local specific constraints and socio-economic considerations.

Nutrient management for improving upland rice productivity and sustainability

Today, soil metal pollution has become a significant environmental issue of great public concern. This is because soil is both a major sink for heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) released into the environment, by both pedogenic and anthropogenic activities; and also a major source of food chain contamination mainly through plant uptake and animal transfer. In addition, HM contamination of soil leads to negative impacts on soil characteristics and function by disturbing both soil biological and physiochemical properties (e.g. extreme soil pH, poor soil structure and soil fertility and lack of soil microbial activity). This eventually leads to decreased crop production. Various soil remediation techniques have been successfully employed to reduce the risks associated with HMs efflux into soil. Application of soil amendments to contaminated soils for heavy metal immobilization and improved soil quality—a critical review

A burgeoning global population is creating unprecedented demands on agriculture to produce ever-increasing amounts of food, fiber, and fuel. In this context, South America has the largest land area in the world that can be used to meet food and fiber demand. In addition, South America also has the largest amount of fresh or potable water globally and favorable climatic conditions throughout the year, which further enhances the role of this continent in providing world food supply. The Brazilian Cerrado, or savanna, a total area of about 205 million ha of acid soils is a good case in point. Similarly, Colombia, Bolivia, Venezuela, Peru, and Ecuador also have large land areas, which can be utilized for crop production. However, the major soils of this continent are acidic and infertile. Hence, liming and fertilizer application are essential. Soil acidity is mainly caused by leaching of bases from soil profile, soils may be acidified with acid deposition from the atmosphere, use of ammoniacal fertilizers, by proton generation in the soil, mineralization of organic matter, intensive crop cultivation, and from N2 fixation by legumes. Important indices that are used in correcting soil acidity for maximizing crop yields are pH, base saturation, aluminum saturation, acidity saturation, calcium saturation, magnesium saturation, and potassium saturation. Sometimes, calcium/magnesium ratio, calcium/potassium ratio, and magnesium/potassium ratio are also used as soil acidity indices in crop production. Optimal values of these soil acidity indices varied with type of soil, crop species, and cultivar or genotypes within species. Management practices that can be adopted in improving crop yields on acid soils are liming, gypsum application, and the use of an adequate rate of fertilizers and organic manures. The use of acidity tolerant crop species or cultivars within species is another important strategy in improving crop yields on acid soils.

Gypsum is a relatively common mineral that is widely available in agricultural areas and has a number of specialized agronomic uses, principally as a Ca source on legumes and as a soil conditioner on sodic soils. Recent research has suggest that the utility of gypsum may extend to a greater range of soils and crops than previously acknowledged. The purpose of this review is to document both current practices and potential new uses of gypsum in agriculture, in order to establish the state of the art in current gypsum use, and to point out needed research in this important area.
