Aims. During the last ~50 years, the population of black hole candidates in X-ray binaries has increased considerably, with 59 Galactic objects being detected in transient low-mass X-ray binaries, as well as a few in persistent systems (including ~5 extragalactic binaries). Methods. We collect near-infrared, optical, and X-ray information spread over hundreds of references to study the population of black holes in X-ray transients as a whole.Results. We present the most updated catalogue of black hole transients. This contains X-ray, optical, and near-infrared observations, together with their astrometric and dynamical properties. The catalogue provides new and useful information in both statistical and observational parameters and provides a thorough and complete overview of the black hole population in the Milky Way. Analysing the distances and spatial distribution of the observed systems, we estimate a total population of ~1300 Galactic black hole transients. This means that we have only discovered less than ~5% of the total Galactic distribution.

BlackCAT: A catalogue of stellar-mass black holes in X-ray transients

The last two decades have seen a great improvement in our understanding of the complex phenomenology observed in transient black hole binary systems, especially thanks to the activity of the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer satellite, complemented by observations from many other X-ray observatories and ground-based radio, optical and infrared facilities. Accretion alone cannot describe accurately the intricate behaviour associated with black hole transients, and it is now clear that the role played by different kinds of (often massive) outflows seen at different phases of the outburst evolution of these systems is as fundamental as the one played by the accretion process itself. The spectral-timing states originally identified in the X-rays and fundamentally based on the observed effect of accretion have acquired new importance as they now allow to describe within a coherent picture the phenomenology observed at other wavelength, where the effects of ejection processes are most evident. With a particular focus on the phenomenology seen in the X-ray band, we review the current state of the art of our knowledge of black hole transients, describing the accretion–ejection connection at play during outbursts through the evolution of the observed spectral-timing properties. Although we mainly concentrate on the observational aspects of the global X-ray transient picture, we also provide physical insight to it by reviewing (when available) the theoretical explanations and models proposed to explain the observed phenomenology.

In recent years proper motion measurements have been added to the set of observational constraints on the current properties of Galactic X-ray binaries. We develop an analysis that allows us to consider all this available information and reconstruct the full evolutionary history of X-ray binaries back to the time of compact object formation. This analysis accounts for mass transfer through the ongoing X-ray phase, tidal circularization before the onset of Roche-lobe overflow, motion through the Galactic potential after the formation of the compact object, and binary orbital dynamics and hydrodynamic modeling of the core collapse. We apply the analysis to the soft X-ray transient GRO J1655-40 and, for the first time, use its full 3D peculiar velocity constraints right after core collapse instead of lower limits on the current space velocity given by the present-day radial velocity. We find that the system has remained within 200pc from the Galactic plane throughout its entire life time and that the mass loss and a kick possibly associated with the black hole (BH) formation imparted a kick velocity of 45-115 km/s to the binary's center of mass. Right after BH formation, the system consists of a 3.5-6.3 Msun BH and a 2.3-4 Msun main-sequence star. At the onset of the X-ray phase the donor is still on the main sequence. We find that a symmetric BH formation event cannot be formally excluded, but that the associated system parameters are only marginally consistent with the currently observed binary properties. BH formation mechanisms involving an asymmetric supernova explosion with associated BH kick velocities of a few tens of km/s, on the other hand, satisfy the constraints much more comfortably. We also derive an upper limit on the BH kick magnitude of 210 km/s. (abridged)

MAXI J1836-194 is a Galactic black hole candidate X-ray binary that was discovered in 2011 when it went into outburst. In this paper, we present the full radio monitoring of this system during its 'failed' outburst, in which the source did not complete a full set of state changes, only transitioning as far as the hard intermediate state. Observations with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) show that the jet properties changed significantly during the outburst. The VLA observations detected linearly polarized emission at a level of similar to 1 per cent early in the outburst, increasing to similar to 3 per cent as the outburst peaked. High-resolution images with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) show an similar to 15 mas jet along the position angle -21 +/- 2 degrees, in agreement with the electric vector position angle found from our polarization results (-21 +/- 4 degrees), implying that the magnetic field is perpendicular to the jet. Astrometric observations suggest that the system required an asymmetric natal kick to explain its observed space velocity. Comparing quasisimultaneous X-ray monitoring with the 5 GHz VLA observations from the 2011 outburst shows an unusually steep hard-state radio/X-ray correlation of L-R alpha L-X(1.8 +/- 0.2), where L-R and LX denote the radio and X-ray luminosities, respectively. With ATCA and Swift monitoring of the source during a period of re-brightening in 2012, we show that the system lay on the same steep correlation. Due to the low inclination of this system, we then investigate the possibility that the observed correlation may have been steepened by variable Doppler boosting.
