Automatic design is a promising approach to generating control software for robot swarms. So far, automatic design has relied on mission-specific objective functions to specify the desired collective behavior. In this paper, we explore the possibility to specify the desired collective behavior via demonstrations. We develop Demo-Cho, an automatic design method that combines inverse reinforcement learning with automatic modular design of control software for robot swarms. We show that, only on the basis of demonstrations and without the need to be provided with an explicit objective function, Demo-Cho successfully generated control software to perform four missions. We present results obtained in simulation and with physical robots.

Aim: Rectal washout (RW) is performed during anterior resection (AR) for rectal cancer to reduce local recurrence (LR). In minimally invasive surgery (MIS) the surgeon might discard RW due to time consumption and technical challenges. The aim was to investigate the impact of RW on the oncological outcome after AR for rectal cancer in a modern managed cohort. Method: Data on patients registered in the Swedish Colorectal Cancer Registry who had undergone elective R0 AR for TNM stage IIII rectal cancer 2007– 2017 with 3year followup were analysed. Subgroup analysis of the patients having MIS was performed. Patients with available 5year followup were also analysed. Multivariable analysis was used. Results: RW was performed in 5706 of 6186 patients (92.2 per cent). RW did not impact the 3year risk of LR, distant metastasis, overall recurrence as well as reduced overall or relative survival. Subgroup analysis of the 1410 patients undergoing MIS did not demonstrate any differences between the groups, however, LR were few. LR within 5 years occurred in 104 of 4583 patients (2.3 per cent) in the RW group compared to 16 of 408 patients (3.9 per cent) in the no RW group (p = 0.037). In multivariable analysis of the LR risk, the hazard ratio was 0.53 (95 per cent C.I. 0.31 to 0.90), favouring RW. Conclusion: The findings indicate that RW in AR for rectal cancer does not impact the 3year oncological outcome. However, after 5year followup a reduction in LR risk was observed after RW. Robot Operating System (ROS) is a set of development tools that has become a de facto standard both in the academia and the industry. However, little effort has been devoted to enable ROS in small robots widely used in swarm robotics for education and research, such as the e-puck. We developed DeimOS : a Linux-based ROS-ready operating system for the e-puck robot extended with the Gumstix Overo COM. DeimOS integrates support for ARGoS3—a swarm-dedicated simulator that facilitates the realization of control software for robot swarms. Thanks to DeimOS , e-puck robots can be modernized to conduct educational and research experiments in nowadays engaging robotics tasks such as robot mapping. DeimOS is a free and open-source software-only solution to extend the lifetime and the capabilities of e-puck robots—a cost effective alternative to existing hardware-based solutions.
