Herein, we report borophene decorated with Ag nanoparticles (Ag@B) as a support, which shows greatly enhanced oxygen-evolution-reaction (OER) performance for Co3O4 catalysts. The excellent OER performance of Co3O4-Ag@B is attributed into two main reasons. First, the conductive Ag-nanoparticles on borophene facilitate the growth of thin Co3O4 nanoplates based on an epitaxy model that greatly enhances the population of Co3O4 catalyst sites on the surface. In the meantime, Ag nanoparticles increase the electrical conductivity of the support, facilitating electrons-transfer from CoⅢ atoms to form catalytically-active CoⅣ sites. Second, the B atoms strongly interact with Co and O atoms on the Co3O4 nanoplates, greatly reducing the energy barrier of OER rate-determining procedure and increasing their stability on borophene supports. The Co3O4-Ag@B requires an overpotential of 270 mV and exhibits a Tafel-slope of 62 mV dec−1 to deliver an oxygen-evolving current-density of 10 mA cm−2, indicating 60 mV lower overpotential and 27 mV dec−1 lower Tafel-slop value than the Co3O4-Ag@rGO catalysts.

Exploring low‐cost and high‐efficient electrocatalyst is an exigent task in developing novel sustainable energy conversion systems, such as fuel cells and electrocatalytic fuel generations. 2D materials, specifically 2D superlattice materials focused here, featured highly accessible active areas, high density of active sites, and high compatibility with property‐complementary materials to form heterostructures with desired synergetic effects, have demonstrated to be promising electrocatalysts for boosting the performance of sustainable energy conversion and storage devices. Nevertheless, the reaction kinetics, and in particular, the functional mechanisms of the 2D superlattice‐based catalysts yet remain ambiguous. In this review, based on the recent progress of 2D superlattice materials in electrocatalysis applications, the rational design and fabrication of 2D superlattices are first summarized and the application of 2D superlattices in electrocatalysis is then specifically discussed. Finally, perspectives on the current challenges and the strategies for the future design of 2D superlattice materials are outlined. This review attempts to establish an intrinsic correlation between the 2D superlattice heterostructures and the catalytic properties, so as to provide some insights into developing high‐performance electrocatalysts for next‐generation sustainable energy conversion and storage.

Heterostructure Engineering of 2D Superlattice Materials for Electrocatalysis

The interfacial properties within a composite structure of membranes play a vital role in the separation properties and application performances. Building an interlayer can facilitate the formation of a highly selective layer as well as improve the interfacial properties of the composite membrane. However, it is difficult for a nanomaterial-based interlayer to increase the flux and retention of nanofiltration membranes simultaneously. Here, we report a nanofiltration membrane with a hybrid dimensional titania interlayer that exhibits excellent separation performance. The interlayer, composed of Fe-doped titania nanosheets and titania nanoparticles, helps the formation of an ultrathin (∼30 nm thick) and defect-free polyamide selective layer with an ideal nanostructure. The hybrid dimensional interlayer endows the membrane with a superior permeability and alleviates flux decline. In addition, the rigid interlayer framework on a PVDF support drastically improves the pressure resistance of nanofiltration membranes and shows negligible flux loss up to 1.5 MPa of pressure.
