Notes on numerical fluid mechanics

In this paper, we consider the solution of large linear systems of equations on transputer networks. We analyze various aspects of an efficient implementation of parallel Gaussian elimination and the solution of triangular systems. In particular, we show the importance of asynchronous communication and of coarse granularity of the resulting tasks. We also demonstrate the scalability of the algorithms for a large number of processors and report on some tests for problems of various size.

On the performance of transputer networks for solving linear systems of equations

We describe a tool that supports data-parallel programming on a distributed memory multiprocessor. Load balancing, based on an evolution algorithm, is integrated into this environment. Timing results for balanced Jacobi relaxation on an adaptive unstructured grid show that the encurred overhead is acceptable for calculation intensive applications.

Load balancing grid-oriented applications on distributed memory parallel computers requires an optimal partitioning and distribution of the data among the processors. In this paper, we first summarise typical properties of grid-oriented applications by describing the types of grids that often arise in the solution of partial differential equations, together with characteristics of iterative algorithms and the resulting data dependencies. We survey some important methods for partitioning and mapping that take into account these properties. Two techniques are discussed in more detail: recursive bisection based on a cost function and genetic algorithms.

Implementation of a solver for the Euler equations on the iPSC/2 multiprocessor

The Express Programming Environment is available on various distributed memory parallel computers and is well suited for parallel scientific computing. We present some calculation and communication benchmark results obtained with Express on a Meiko transputer system. We discuss the parallelization of a solver for the Euler equations and we present and analyze the performance and the parallel efficiency of the code.

Gaussian elimination with partial pivoting can be implemented in several ways on a multitude of parallel hardware. In this note we give a comparison of implementations of the algorithm for banded matrices on an iPSC/2 hypercube and on a square grid of Transputers. For both implementations a scattered square allocation scheme is used. The comparison shows that machine characteristics strongly influence the attainable efficiency.
