The thyroglossal cyst is the most common nonodontogenic cyst in the neck. This cyst may also occur in the lingual or submental areas, though more rarely. Malignant changes have been described. Clinically, no differentiation between a benign cyst and a malignancy can be made. The literature is reviewed regarding the embryology, epidemiology, etiology, symptomatology, radiology, histology, and treatment of this cyst and its malignant counterpart.

A total of 841 reviewed cases and 75 reported cases of fibro-osseous lesions of the jaws, excluding the giant cell group, are analyzed with regard to clinical, radiographic, and histologic features. Precise criteria for the differential diagnosis of fibrous dysplasia, ossifying fibroma, gigantiform cementoma, chronic diffuse sclerosing osteomyelitis, focal sclerosing osteomyelitis, and periapical cementoma have been presented with emphasis on radiographic and behavioral features.

Summary The reports of thirty-seven cases of papillary carcinoma of the thyroglossal tract from the literature were combined with an additional eighteen cases from the authors' experience and from the files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. These fifty-five cases were summarized to illustrate the clinical course of the disease and to describe a rational form of management. It is usually a surprise finding in what was thought to be a benign thyroglossal tract cyst. With exceptions defined in this article, the Sistrunk operation for benign lesions also controls the rare case of papillary carcinoma of the thyroglossal tract.

This report details a case of carcinoma in a thyroglossal cyst. Report of Case A 52-year-old male was seen at our Head and Neck Clinic on Nov. 22, 1960, complaining of a "lump in the neck," which had been present for 2 years. The swelling had been small when first noticed by the patient, and several months later it had almost disappeared. Three months before consultation in our Clinic, he noticed that the nodule had suddenly increased in size. No accompanying symptoms had been observed by the patient. On examination, a 3×2 cm. smooth and firm mass, which moved up and down when the patient was swallowing, was encountered in the midline of the neck at the level of the hyoid bone but extending more inferiorly than superiorly. EXCISIONAL surgery for cancer of the larynx and pharynx has always been accompanied by the possibility of subsequent fistulas in the neck. In former years this ensuing complication was treated by delayed plastic reconstructive procedures in a secondstage operation, while directing the first operation primarily to the excision of the anatomical areas involved by the disease. The uncomfortable and handicapping postoperative condition of the patient, originating in feeding difficulties, constant drooling of saliva, etc, motivated the surgeons to look for a more satisfactory solution to this situation. As a result, in recent years primary reconstructive surgery in continuity with excisional surgery has been performed whenever possible, unless the excision of the involved area is of such extent that delayed, staged reconstructive procedures are mandatory. As a contribution to the existing casuistics relating to sarcoma botryoides, we consider it of interest to report a case of this unusual tumor encountered in the uvula and soft palate. Report of a Case In September, 1956, a 9-year-old girl was operated on for a "papilloma" of the uvula and soft palate. The papilloma, 2.5 cm. in its larger diameter, was implanted at the root of the uvula and extended 1 cm. onto the soft palate. Its macroscopic aspect was that of a benign papilloma, having a fern or coral-like appearance. With the patient under general anesthesia, the papilloma was excised by electrocoagulating its base. Recovery was uneventful, and the patient was free of symptoms for several months following the operation.
