Professor Hoeflich explores the notion of serendipity and its components as they relate to historians, particularly legal historians, and to those institutions - libraries and archives - that present the opportunities for serendipity to work its magic. He also discusses the ways in which libraries and archives can help to encourage serendipitous discoveries, and the dangers he sees in over-efficient and economically rational disposal policies, including reproduction instead of preservation of originals.

Fantasy vs repression: representations of the child and the feminine in Lewis Carroll’s Alice Cycle

The importance of children's literature has never been over emphasized. This research aimed to explore a new perspective to study children's literature. Document study demonstrated that previous studies on children's literature were mostly from the perspectives of genre and content as well as the interaction between readers and the text. The linguistic studies on interpersonal meaning give light on the study on children's literature. The document study in this paper illustrated the possibility to apply the systemic-functional grammar to the research on children's literature. This research provides a more profound perspective to look into the linguistic resource in children's literature, which have great influence on their development.

A New Perspective to Study Children's Literature: from the Systemic-functional Grammar Perspective

This Element examines the early years of British Young Adult (YA) publishing at three strategic publishing houses: Penguin, Heinemann and Macmillan. Specifically, it discusses their YA imprints (Penguin Peacocks, Heinemann New Windmills and Macmillan Topliners), all created at a time when the population of Britain was changing and becoming more diverse. Migration of colonial and former colonial subjects from the Caribbean, India, and Africa contributed to a change in the ethnic makeup of Britain, especially in major urban centres such as London, Birmingham and Manchester. While publishing has typically been seen as slow to respond to societal changes in children's literature, all three of these Young Adult imprints attempted to address and include Black British and British Asian readers and characters in their books; ultimately, however, their focus remained on white readers' concerns.

The Making of Modern Children's Literature in Britain: Publishing and Criticism in the 1960s and 1970s

Serendipity has become a ‘sine qua non of archival research’ (Tamboukou 151), but it is less clear how it might be cultivated – or even whether such a pursuit is worthwhile. Newcastle University's 2015 masterclass on the place of the archive within children's literature research offered the opportunity to explore the role of serendipity from several perspectives, exposing both the possibilities and the limitations of serendipity in the archive. Paradoxically, serendipity is best fostered by sustained scholarly enquiry, but it also depends on a willingness to move beyond a focus on specific outcomes. This raises questions about the future of serendipitous research in an academic world which allows increasingly little time for exploratory research and about the impact of new technologies.

Au cœur de ceux-ci se trouvait le droit de lire, et le droit qu’avaient les enfants a des livres qui reconnaissaient les realites de leurs existences. Leila Berg – activiste, auteure, editrice – etait a l’avant-garde de ce mouvement avec sa serie de livres pour jeunes lecteurs Nippers. Cet article etudie Nippers dans son contexte, et montre comment les livres de cette serie ont rassemble une longue tradition de pensee activiste et resume une bonne part de l’esprit qui, plus largement, avait anime 68.
