Nature has created high-performance materials and structures over millions of years of evolution. Inspired by the concepts and design principles evident in natural materials and structures, high-performance tactile sensors, based on bioinspired structures/functions, natural biopolymers, and biomimetic strategies, have been developed. However, the primary challenge is to develop novel sensing mechanisms and device structures that are sufficiently sensitive and stretchable using bioinspired materials. Herein, we review the recent advancements made in this field, focusing on biomimetic approaches to produce tactile sensors with essential sensing capabilities and the development of bioinspired materials with the desired electrical and mechanical properties. In addition, we highlight the potential applications of these devices and discuss the potential directions for future work.

Tuning electronic energy band in a piezoelectric semiconductor rod via mechanical loading

Recent research on hybrid organic–inorganic perovskites has greatly advanced the fields of photovoltaics, photodetection, and light emission. The emergence of piezotronics and piezo-phototronics has led to tremendous high-performance devices that are based on piezoelectric materials. Although many previous research studies were centered around single crystal hybrid perovskites, polycrystalline materials are easier to fabricate, such as by using a solution-process, and have many other advantages, e.g. low cost, low environmental requirements, and high conversion efficiency. So far, there are very few reports of piezotronically modulated polycrystalline perovskite devices. Here, a novel piezo-phototronic effect enhanced photodetector based on MAPbI3 polycrystalline perovskite is designed, fabricated, and subsequently characterized. With polycrystalline materials, it is seen that the device performances can be significantly enhanced using the piezo-phototronic effect. Moreover, the polycrystalline perovskite introduces unprecedented potential to fine tune the devices from weak to strong piezoelectric performance. Our study explores the possibility of using polycrystalline perovskites to create high performance strain-controlled piezo-phototronic devices, which will have promising applications in the internet of things, multifunctional micro/nanoelectromechanical devices and sensor networks.

The self-heating effect can be considered as a catastrophic phenomenon that occurs in polymers and polymer–matrix composites (PMCs) subjected to fatigue loading or vibrations. This phenomenon appears in the form of temperature growth in such structures due to their relatively low thermal conductivities. The appearance of thermal stress resulting from temperature growth and the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) mismatch between fibers and neighboring polymer matrix initiates and/or accelerates structural degradation and consequently provokes sudden fatigue failure in the structures. Therefore, it is of primary significance for a number of practical applications to first characterize the degradation mechanism at the nano-, micro- and macroscales caused by the self-heating phenomenon and then minimize it through the implementation of numerous approaches. One viable solution is to cool the surfaces of considered structures using various cooling scenarios, such as environmental and operational factors, linked with convection, contributing to enhancing heat removal through convection. Furthermore, if materials are appropriately selected regarding their thermomechanical properties involving thermal conductivity, structural degradation may be prevented or at least minimized. This article presents a benchmarking survey of the conducted research studies associated with the fatigue performance of cyclically loaded PMC structures and an analysis of possible solutions to avoid structural degradation caused by the self-heating effect.

This paper presents an overview of the self-heating phenomena and the continuum thermodynamics framework related to the damping and fatigue of metals. The self-heating process under cyclic loading generally undergoes three phases: Phase I with gradually increasing temperature to a stabilized or steady-state in Phase II, followed by Phase III with an accelerated temperature increase until the test sample ruptures. Although energy dissipation and heat generation are all captured by the first law of thermodynamics, the functional form of the heat source(s) with entropy change is not formulated for engineering materials. Experimentally, infrared (IR) thermographic techniques can measure the surface temperature variation during constant-amplitude fatigue testing. The observed relationship between the stabilization temperature or temperature increase rate and the applied stress amplitude is often used to infer the fatigue endurance limit, above which point heat generation from “damage” leads to acceleration of self-heating. The IR thermographic fatigue testing offers a rapid alternative method to assess the material’s fatigue strength. But, the full physical interpretation of the phenomena remains a challenge. On the other hand, the Tanaka-Mura–Wu model is introduced to describe fatigue crack nucleation via accumulation of dislocation dipole pile-up, which provides a class-A prediction (forecast before even happening) for fatigue crack nucleation life in terms of the material’s elastic modulus, Burgers vector, surface energy, and the loading parameter such as cyclic stress/strain range. Then, the release of dislocation dipole pile-up energy to form new crack surfaces is brought into the energy argument. With the inclusion of crack formation energy in the first law of thermodynamics, a unified framework of deformation, damping, fatigue, and self-heating may be established for structural design.
