The Use of Antimalarial Drugs against Viral Infection
Sarah D'Alessandro,Diletta Scaccabarozzi,Lucia Signorini,Federica Perego,D. Ilboudo,Pasquale Ferrante,Serena Delbue +6 more
- 08 Jan 2020
TL;DR: The in vitro/in vivo and clinical studies conducted to evaluate the antiviral activities of four classes of antimalarial drugs: Artemisinin derivatives, aryl-aminoalcohols, aminoquinolines, and antimicrobial drugs are reviewed.
JC virus load in cerebrospinal fluid and transcriptional control region rearrangements may predict the clinical course of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy
Serena Delbue,Francesca Elia,Camilla Carloni,Eleonora Tavazzi,Enrico Marchioni,Silvia Carluccio,Lucia Signorini,Stefano Novati,Renato Maserati,Pasquale Ferrante +9 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that the JCV load in the CSF and the organization of the TCR should be considered as indicators of PML clinical outcome.
High frequency of Merkel cell polyomavirus DNA in the urine of kidney transplant recipients and healthy controls
Lucia Signorini,Mirco Belingheri,Federico Ambrogi,Elisabetta Pagani,Sandro Binda,Rosalia Ticozzi,Mariano Ferraresso,Luciana Ghio,Bruno Giacon,Pasquale Ferrante,Serena Delbue +10 more
TL;DR: MCPyV demonstrates an excretion pattern similar to those of JCV and BKV, persisting in the kidney and infecting skin cells upon reactivation, with subsequent integration and transformation.

JC virus urinary excretion and seroprevalence in natalizumab-treated multiple sclerosis patients
Serena Delbue,Francesca Elia,Camilla Carloni,Valentina Pecchenini,Diego Franciotta,Matteo Gastaldi,Elena Colombo,Lucia Signorini,Silvia Carluccio,Anna Bellizzi,Roberto Bergamaschi,Pasquale Ferrante +11 more
TL;DR: The results indicated that natalizumab therapy may increase the rate of J CV urinary shedding, and it was confirmed that the identification of JCV carriers cannot solely rely on serological tests, but sensitive methods for viral DNA detection should be adopted to more precisely identify the truly JCV uninfected cases.

JC virus infection is acquired very early in life: evidence from a longitudinal serological study.
Francesca Elia,Sonia Villani,Federico Ambrogi,Lucia Signorini,Simone Dallari,Sandro Binda,Valeria Primache,Laura Pellegrinelli,Pasquale Ferrante,Serena Delbue +9 more
TL;DR: JCV primary infection likely occurs before 6 months of age, and a sizeable percentage of Italian infants will become JCV seropositive within 2 years of age; this study can be used to determine the optimal age for potential future JCV vaccination in infants.
