Perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have captured a host of researchers’ attention due to their unique properties, which have been introduced to lots of optoelectronics areas, such as light‐emitting diodes, lasers, photodetectors, and solar cells. Herein, the authors aim at reviewing the achievements of PQDs applied to solar cells in recent years. The engineering concerning surface ligands, additives, and hybrid composition for PQDSCs is outlined first, followed by analyzing the reasons of undesired performance of PQDSCs. Subsequently, a novel overview that PQDs are utilized to improve the photovoltaic performance of various kinds of solar cells, is provided. Finally, this review is summarized and some challenges and perspectives concerning PQDs are also discussed.

Solution-processed colloidal lead halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) are considered one of the promising candidates for next-generation photovoltaics (PVs) due to the excellent optoelectronic properties and low-cost synthetic process. In particular, all-inorganic perovskite (AIP) QDs exhibit better prospects due to their better stability. Although remarkable breakthroughs have been made in bulk perovskite solar cells (SCs), the AIP QD-based SCs (AIPQDSCs) are still on their way to catch up. A lot of reports have summarized the development of perovskite SCs, but few have focused on AIPQDSCs. In this review, we focus on the latest development of AIPQDSCs, and analyze the current bottlenecks they are facing. Also, various optimization means have been discussed to improve the performance of AIPQDSCs from two perspectives of QD materials and device structure, including compositional regulation, surface engineering, interface engineering, and optimization of the carrier transport layer. In addition, AIP QDs as converter for SCs are also presented. Since the stability of perovskite SCs is currently the most pressing issue, the device stability is also highlighted. In the end, a brief summary and perspectives are presented to look forward to the future development of AIPQDSCs.

Recent advances in interfacial engineering of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells: a materials perspective

Manganese ion doped CsPbX3 perovskite quantum dots (QDs) demonstrate high absorption of ultraviolet (UV) light and efficient orange emission with a large Stokes shift, and are almost transparent to visible light, which are ideal photon energy converters for solar cells. In this work, Mn2+ ion doped CsPbCl3 QDs were synthesized by incorporating a long-chain ammonium ligand dodecyl dimethylammonium chloride (DDAC), in which the DDAC ligand not only played the role of replacing the surface ligands of QDs, but also enhanced the efficiency and stability of Mn2+ ion doped QDs. The as-prepared QD sample displayed a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) as high as 91% and served as a photon energy converter for silicon solar cells (SSCs). The photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of SSCs increased from 19.64% to 20.65% with a relative enhancement of 5.14%. This work displays a method to tune the efficiency of QDs by modifying the surface ligands and an efficient photon energy converter for SSCs, which is of great importance for practical applications.

Dual Interfacial Modification Engineering for Highly Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

All-inorganic perovskite nanocrystals have drawn great attention for various photoelectric devices. However, pristine blue-emitting perovskite nanocrystals suffer from low fluorescence intensity, limiting their applications. Localized optical field manipulation using metal nanostructures is a promising strategy to boost the luminescence performance of perovskite nanocrystals. Herein, we synthesized novel Ag@SiO2@CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I, and their mixtures) composites for the first time, obtaining a remarkable luminescence enhancement for all the perovskite nanocrystals. Particularly, an extreme improvement of the blue emitting fluorescence of CsPbCl1.5Br1.5 by more than 1,000 times is realized in Ag@SiO2@CsPbCl1.5Br1.5 composites. The experimental and theoretical results (finite-difference time-domain simulation) reveal that such high enhancement is ascribed to a well match between the excitation/emission of CsPbCl1.5Br1.5 nanocrystals and localized surface plasmon resonance absorption of Ag nanospheres, resulting in the absorption and emission enhancement of perovskite nanocrystals. Our work offers a new way to improve the fluorescence intensity of perovskite nanocrystals and opportunity for their future application in optoelectronic devices.
