A dynamic Cournot duopoly model with isoelastic demand function and knowledge spillover effects is established, in which the goals of two enterprises are relative profit maximization. Since these two enterprises only have incomplete information of the market, then it is assumed that the enterprises are boundedly rational, and they need to adjust their production decision in next period according to the gradient adjustment mechanism. Sufficient conditions for the existence and stable properties of unique Nash equilibrium can be judged with the help of the Jury criterion. The size of stability region is related to the values of parameters and the system has two different paths to chaos, one is via flip bifurcation and another is via Neimark-Sacker bifurcation. Finally, the complex dynamic characteristics also can be further studied by using numerical simulation, including the structures of multi-layer Arnold's tongues and coexistence of attractors.

Stability, multi-stability and instability in Cournot duopoly game with knowledge spillover effects and relative profit maximization

We report the discovery of a regular lattice of exceptional quint points in a periodically driven oscillator, namely, in the frequency–amplitude control parameter space of a photochemically periodically perturbed ruthenium-catalyzed Belousov–Zhabotinsky reaction model. Quint points are singular boundary points where five distinct stable oscillatory phases coalesce. While spikes of the activator show a smooth and continuous variation, the spikes of the inhibitor show an intricate but regular branching into a myriad of stable phases that have fivefold contact points. Such boundary points form a wide parameter lattice as a function of the frequency and amplitude of light absorption. These findings revise current knowledge about the topology of the control parameter space of a celebrated prototypical example of an oscillating chemical reaction.

Dynamical analysis of the fractional-order centrifugal flywheel governor system and its accelerated adaptive stabilization with the optimality

Due to the fluctuation of membrane potential of neuron, there are complex time-varying electromagnetic fields in nervous systems, and the exciting electromagnetic field will further regulate the discharge activities of neurons. In this paper, the coupling of magnetic flux variables to the membrane potential is realised by using a magnetron memristor, and then a 5D extended Hindmarsh–Rose (e-HR) neuron model is established. With the help of Matcont software, the distribution and bifurcation properties of the equilibrium point in the e-HR model is analysed. It is found that there are subcritical Hopf bifurcation, coexisting oscillation modes and hidden limit cycle attractors with period 1 and period 2. In addition, by applying the washout controller, the subcritical Hopf bifurcation point can be transformed into the supercritical Hopf bifurcation point. Thus, the hidden oscillation behaviour of the model can be effectively eliminated. In order to analyse the influence of various parameters on the bifurcation behaviour, numerical simulation of two-parameter bifurcation, single-parameter bifurcation, maximum Lyapunov exponential and time response are given. It is found that the e-HR neuron has a complex bifurcation structure, i.e., the bifurcation structure with period-doubling bifurcations, inverse period-doubling bifurcations, period-adding bifurcations with and without chaos. At the same time, the study also finds that the coexistence behaviour of the periodic cluster discharge and the mixed-mode oscillations (MMOs) can be observed from the bifurcation structure with unique ‘periodic dislocation layer’ on the two-parameter plane. Interestingly, the bursting mode of the system is converted into MMOs when the system parameters are randomly perturbed. The results of this study provide useful insights into the complex discharge patterns and hidden discharge behaviours of neurons under electromagnetic induction.

Dynamic response of the e-HR neuron model under electromagnetic induction

The impact of predator dormancy on the population dynamics of phytoplankton-zooplankton in freshwater ecosystems is investigated using a simple model including dormancy, a strategy to avoid extinction. In addition to recently reported chaos-mediated mixed-mode oscillations, as the carrying capacity grows, we find surprisingly wide phases of nonchaos-mediated mixed-mode oscillations to be present well before the onset of chaos in the system. Nonchaos-mediated cascades display spike-adding sequences, while chaos-mediated cascades show spike-doubling. A host of braided periodic phases with exotic shapes is found embedded in a region of control parameters dominated by chaotic oscillations. We describe the organization of these complicated phases and show how they are interconnected and how their complexity unfolds as control parameters change. The novel nonchaos-mediated phases are found to be large and stable, even for low carrying capacity.
