Challenges on scale applications of rechargeable Zn-air batteries

With rapid advances in optoelectronics, electrochromic materials and devices have received tremendous attentions from both industry and academia for their strong potentials in wearable and portable electronics, displays/billboards, adaptive camouflage, tunable optics, and intelligent devices, etc. However, conventional electrochromic materials and devices typically present some serious limitations such as undesirable dull colors, and long switching time, hindering their deeper development. Optical resonators have been proven to be the most powerful platform for providing strong optical confinement and controllable light-matter interactions. They generate locally enhanced electromagnetic near-fields that can convert small refractive index changes in electrochromic materials into high-contrast color variations, enabling multicolor or even panchromatic tuning of electrochromic materials. Here, resonant-cavity-enhanced electrochromic materials and devices, an advanced and emerging trend in electrochromics, are reviewed. In this review, we will focus on the progress in multicolor electrochromic materials and devices based on different types of optical resonators and their advanced and emerging applications, including multichromatic displays, adaptive visible camouflage, visualized energy storage, and applications of multispectral tunability. Among these topics, principles of optical resonators, related materials/devices and multicolor electrochromic properties are comprehensively discussed and summarized. Finally, the challenges and prospects for resonant-cavity-enhanced electrochromic materials and devices are presented. Abstract Organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) have garnered significant research attention owing to their immense application prospects in leading technologies for full-color flat panel displays and eco-friendly solid-state lighting. They demonstrate exceptional features such as mercury-free construction, wide viewing angle, superior color quality and captivating flexibility. The requirements of light-emitting organic materials pertaining to high stability, lifetime and luminescence quantum yield, combined with the fabrication of devices with high performance efficiency, are highly challenging. Rational molecular design of 1,8-naphthalimide (NI) derivatives can offer quite promising results in achieving standard-light-emitting materials with a wide range of colors for OLED applications. This review is mainly focused on the synthesis and usage of varyingly substituted NI frameworks as luminescent host, dopant, hole-blocking and electron-transporting materials for OLEDs that emit not only red, orange, green and blue colors, but also function as white emitters, which can really have an impact on reducing the energy consumption. The future prospects that could be explored to improve the research in the highly promising field of OLEDs are also discussed. Graphical abstract

White photoluminescence both in solution and the solid-state was obtained by the controlled protonation of a blue emitting 4,6-bis(arylvinyl)pyrimidine, which resulted in the formation of an orange emissive acidified form. This dye has potential applications in the fabrication of white OLEDs based on only one material.

Protonable pyrimidine derivative for white light emission

Room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) electrolytes are excellent candidates for highly stable electrochromic (EC) devices because of their wide electrochemical windows and good environmental stability. However, the small crystal spacings and molecular gaps of conventional EC materials limit the ion-diffusion rate of RTILs’ large cations. The multiple insertions/extractions of large cations can destroy the structure of the conventional EC materials, leading to structural collapse and poor EC performance. Here, we demonstrate that metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with large intrinsic pores in crystals are promising materials for stable and high-performance RTIL-based EC systems. The MOFs’ large intrinsic hexagonal channels provide suitable ion-transport channels for RTILs, leading to ideal electrochemical stability. We further demonstrate a patterned large-area MOF/RTIL-based EC device, suggesting the promise in future digital displays.
