Highly efficient replacement of traditional intumescent flame retardants in polypropylene by manganese ions doped melamine phytate nanosheets.

Polypropylene (PP), one of five general-purpose plastics, is widely used in many fields. However, the intrinsic alkane structure of PP makes it relatively easy to burn, leading to limiting its scope of application. Here, this article reviews the most commonly flame retarding strategies used in PP matrices, including the flame-retardant compounds, application methods as well as flame-inhibition mechanism and also focuses on recent advances and foresees the future outlook of such applications. It is seen that traditional flame retardants and some new compounds are considered in modifying the fire behaviors of PP. At present, with the enhancement of environmental awareness, the application frequency of novel materials in this field is increasing. Thus, the harmonious combination of traditional flame retardants with the newly derived flame retardants has broadened the choice of researchers to come up with novel strategies for improving the fire performance of PP matrices.

In this article, the investigation mainly focuses on the synergistic effect of expandable graphite (EG) and intumescent flame retardants in improving the flame retardancy of polypropylene (PP). The ratio of melamine polyphosphate (MPP) and dipentaerythritol (DPER) has been studied by limiting oxygen index (LOI) and vertical burning test (UL-94) tests. The results demonstrate that the optimal ratio of MPP and DPER in flame-retarding PP was 3/1. Except that, the incorporation of EG into the PP/MPP/DPER system can greatly improve the flame-retardant properties of PP materials. When the content of EG is 10 wt%, LOI value of PP composites reaches 33.2 % and obtains V-0 rating in UL-94 tests. Furthermore, Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) indicate that the main char-formation process of this system occurs at 350–400 °C. And char residue for PP composites after combustion was systematically analyzed by FTIR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra. Based on these facts, a potential condensed flame-retardant mechanism was primarily proposed.

Synergistic effect of expandable graphite and intumescent flame retardants on the flame retardancy and thermal stability of polypropylene

In this paper, a halogen-free flame retardant with two different functional components was prepared via a simple method. The novelty of this work is the combination of acid source and char-forming agent in one compound simultaneously. And the advantage of this method lies in effectively avoiding the mixture of several components for composites during thermal processing and improving the flame retardancy of polymers. Besides, the chemical structure of modified ammonium phosphate (MAPP) was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction spectra (XRD), respectively. The results indicate that thermal decomposition process of APP after modification is obviously changed. When polypropylene (PP) is composited with 30 phr MAPP, the limiting oxygen index value can reach 28.5 % and pass vertical burning tests (UL-94) V-1 rating. Simultaneously, thermal gravimetric analysis demonstrates that the introduction of diethanolamine can improve the char-forming rate and char residue of PP/APP composites. Except that, the thermal pyrolysis of MAPP detected by FTIR spectra deduces that the char-forming process happens at 350–400 °C. The analysis on char residue after combustion indicates that the cross-linking bonds of P–O–C groups appear. At last, a potential condensed mechanism was primarily proposed.

Fabrication of halogen-free ammonium phosphate with two components via a simple method and its flame retardancy in polypropylene composites

In this paper, a facile and novel method was adopted in tailoring β-cyclodextrin (CD), which can drastically improve its surface hydrophobicity and decrease its water solubility. By this way, the interfacial compatibility between CD and polypropylene (PP) is distinctly strengthened after modification that is well certified by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and molecular dynamics simulation, respectively. Surprisingly, the flame retardant properties of PP compositing with modified CD (CM) are slightly higher than that of PP/CD. Moreover, the flame retardancy of PP/CM system can be maintained after water treatment. Except that, the synergistic effect of expandable graphite (EG) on the flame retardant properties of PP/melamine phosphate (MP)/CM system were systematically investigated. It can be observed that when the content of EG is 10 wt.%, the flame retardant properties of PP system achieve 31.2 % in limiting oxygen index tests and pass UL-94 V-0 rating in vertical burning tests. And a potential condensed flame retardant mechanism was proposed in detail.
