Green economy efficiency is the core-factor of urban economic and environmental development. As a sustainable instruments, renewable energy technology innovation (RETI) not only reflects the low energy-consumption, but also promotes the reasonable and balanced relationship between resources utilization and urban economy. In this regard, this paper selects China's cities to investigate the effect of RETI on urban green economy efficiency from 2004 to 2020 based on theoretical analyses and previous studies. The paper finds that RETI can promote urban green economy efficiency significantly, passing a series of robustness test, and its effect has connected differently with the factor of regional factor, cleaner production level and environment pollution. Meanwhile, RETI promotes urban green economy efficiency by reducing CO2 emission and polluting manufacturing agglomeration. To date, this study has discovered the green economy efficiency improvement effects of RETI, providing theoretical basis and practical recommendations for government, technological agency and urban industries.

A dynamic STIRPAT model used in the current study is based on panel data from the eight most populous countries from 1975 to 2020, revealing the nonlinear effects of urbanization routes (percentage of total urbanization, percentage of small cities and percentage of large cities) on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Using “Dynamic Display Unrelated Regression (DSUR)” and “Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS)” regressions, the outcomes reflect that percentage of total urbanization and percentage of small cities have an incremental influence on carbon dioxide emissions. However, square percentage of small cities and square percentage of total urbanization have significant adverse effects on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The positive relationship between the percentage of small cities, percentage of total urbanization and CO2 emissions and the negative relationship between the square percentage of small cities, square percentage of total urbanization and CO2 emissions legitimize the inverted U-shaped EKC hypothesis. The impact of the percentage of large cities on carbon dioxide emissions is significantly negative, while the impact of the square percentage of large cities on carbon dioxide emissions is significantly positive, validating a U-shaped EKC hypothesis. The incremental effect of percentage of small cities and percentage of total urbanization on long-term environmental degradation can provide support for ecological modernization theory. Energy intensity, Gross Domestic Product (GDP), industrial growth and transport infrastructure stimulate long-term CO2 emissions. Country-level findings from the AMG estimator support a U-shaped link between the percentage of small cities and CO2 emissions for each country in the entire panel except the United States. In addition, the Dumitrescu and Hulin causality tests yield a two-way causality between emission of carbon dioxide and squared percentage of total urbanization, between the percentage of the large cities and emission of carbon dioxide, and between energy intensity and emission of carbon dioxide. This study proposes renewable energy options and green city-friendly technologies to improve the environmental quality of urban areas.

Dynamic nonlinear CO2 emission effects of urbanization routes in the eight most populous countries

The problemof biodiversity conservation is formulated by theUNSustainableDevelopment Goals (SDGs): SDG 14 (conservation of marine ecosystems) and SDG 15 (conservation of terrestrial ecosystems) (Mehmood et al., 2022; Sobieraj et al., 2022; Wang et al., 2022). The relevance of this problem is particularly high at present against the background of the global increase in the number of zoonotic diseases, as well as against the background of the COVID-19 pandemic, which, according to many scientists (Khetan, 2020; Codeço et al., 2021; Fernández et al., 2021; Lawler et al., 2021; Morand and Lajaunie, 2021; Tsantopoulos et al., 2021), is a new zoonotic disease directly or indirectly caused by the destruction of the natural habitat of animals and the unsafe neighbourhood of people with them. In the existing literature, Dick et al. (2022), McLaughlin et al. (2022), Xie et al. (2022), the reduction of biodiversity is interpreted as an environmental problem. The main attention is paid to natural and climatic threats to biodiversity. In their works, Marques et al. (2019), Meng et al. (2019), Otero et al. (2020), andUsmanMirza et al. (2020) also point to the significant role of economic factors of biodiversity, the reduction of which is perceived as the environmental costs of economic growth. At the same time, the role of social factors is insufficiently developed and not defined, which is a research gap. In this article, the study is based on theNoosphericmodel of economic systems, according to which these systems are considered as a unity of all constituent elements aiming at a balance of economic, social and environmental development. However, the role of social factors is not elaborated sufficiently nor determined in developing countries, which is a research gap. This study investigates the consequences of financial development on environmental quality in Malaysia by using monetary access, profundity, and effectiveness as support components from 1990 to 2019. Monetary events, population expansion, financial development, and energy consumption contribute to environmental degradation in the short and long-run.
