On-chip gas detection in silicon optical microcavities.
TL;DR: Refractive index differences as small as 10-4 between air and acetylene at varying pressures in the near-IR are measured to detect acetylene gas on a silicon chip using photonic microcavities and a chip-scale gas cell.

Low loss etchless silicon photonic waveguides
TL;DR: In this paper, a low-loss silicon waveguide fabricated without any silicon etching is presented, which produces ultra-smooth sidewalls with width variations of 0.3 nm.

Cavity-enhanced on-chip absorption spectroscopy using microring resonators
TL;DR: This work measures absorption spectra of less than 2 nL of N-methylaniline from 1460 nm to 1610 nm with 1 nm resolution and effective free space path lengths up to 5 mm to help realize a completely on-chip spectroscopy device for lab-on-a-chip applications.

Ultrasmall Mode Volumes in Dielectric Optical Microcavities
TL;DR: C Cavities with V(eff) on the order of 10(-2)(lambda/2n)(-3) can be achieved using dielectric discontinuities, with a corresponding increase in the Purcell factor of nearly 2 orders of magnitude relative to previously demonstrated high index photonic crystal cavities.

Compact, low-loss and low-power 8×8 broadband silicon optical switch
Long Chen,Young-Kai Chen +1 more
TL;DR: A 8×8 broadband optical switch on silicon for transverse-electrical polarization using a switch-and-selector architecture is demonstrated and the upper bound of total power consumption is estimated to be less than 70 mW even without optimization of the default state of the individual switch elements.
