Metamaterial absorbers have been widely studied and continuously concerned owing to their excellent resonance features of ultra‐thin thickness, light‐weight, and high absorbance. Their applications, however, are typically restricted by the intrinsic dispersion of materials and strong resonant features of patterned arrays (mainly referring to narrow absorption bandwidth). It is, therefore essential to reassert the principles of building broadband metamaterial absorbers (BMAs). Herein, the research progress of BMAs from principles, design strategies, tunable properties to functional applications are comprehensively and deeply summarized. Physical principles behind broadband absorption are briefly discussed, typical design strategies in realizing broadband absorption are further emphasized, such as top‐down lithography, bottom‐up self‐assembly, and emerging 3D printing technology. Diversified active components choices, including optical response, temperature response, electrical response, magnetic response, mechanical response, and multi‐parameter responses, are reviewed in achieving dynamically tuned broadband absorption. Following this, the achievements of various interdisciplinary applications for BMAs in energy‐harvesting, photodetectors, radar‐IR dual stealth, bolometers, noise absorbing, imaging, and fabric wearable are summarized. Finally, the challenges and perspectives for future development of BMAs are discussed.

Review of Broadband Metamaterial Absorbers: From Principles, Design Strategies, and Tunable Properties to Functional Applications

The Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase can be used to control the phase of circularly polarized electromagnetic waves. However, there are few studies on the modulation of dual-circularly polarized multi-beam using the transmissive coding metasurface. A scheme of spin-controlling multi-beam by transmissive coding metasurface is proposed for dual-circular polarization simultaneously. The transmissive coding metasurface (TCMS) can transmit linearly polarized incidence into multi-beam with orthogonally circular polarization. The phase distribution is designed based the convolution theorem, and the elements of metasurface conforming to the PB phase are arranged according to the phase distribution. In order to compensate the emitting spherical waves into plane waves and realize the transmissive waves with dual-circular polarization, an interesting scheme of elements in different regions with different rotating phase are presented based on the principle of phase compensation. TCMS can transmit linearly polarized waves into two left-hand circularly polarized (LHCP) beams and two right-hand circularly polarized (RHCP) beams. The prototype of TCMS is fabricated and measured, and the experimental results agree well with the simulated data. The transmissive metasurface has potential application in holograms and satellite communication. 

Transmissive coding metasurface with dual-circularly polarized multi-beam

Recently, reconfigurable metasurfaces have facilitated dynamic manipulation of electromagnetic (EM) waves, opening new opportunities for fascinating meta-devices. So far, most devices are working in reflection region with limited polarization states. Here, we demonstrate a reconfigurable multifunctional transmissive metasurface for both linearly and circularly polarized waves manipulations. Specifically, the designed meta-atom contains dual-layer metallic cross-strips and one-layer circular slotted patch. Eight positive-intrinsic-negative diodes are loaded between each strip structure through via hole, with each two of diodes as a group along x- and y-direction, respectively, and thus supporting four switchable states via different applied bias voltages. Numerical results indicate that the designed meta-atom achieves high-rate transmission of 0.9 and individual phase manipulation in four independent transmission channels at 7.4 GHz. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, we numerically and experimentally show different versatile functionalities, including anomalous deflections with steered beams in range of 0° ∼ 40°, orbital angular momentum generation with mode of l = 1, and beam focusing among four polarization-encoded channels at 7.4 GHz. Our metasurface owns the advantages of multi-polarization EM wave manipulations in transmission mode, which completely distinguishes from previously reported works with single polarization in reflection mode. 

Reconfigurable transmissive metasurface synergizing dynamic and geometric phase for versatile polarization and wavefront manipulations

Abstract Electromagnetic wave multiplexing, especially for that occurring at different incidences (spatial-frequency multiplexing), is pivotal for ultrathin multifunctional interfaces and high-capacity information processing and communication. It is yet extremely challenging based on passive and compact wave elements, since the wave excitation and scattering channels are exclusively coupled through gradient phases and hence momentum matching condition at the interface. Here, we propose a spin-momentum multiplexed paradigm called a super-reflector enabling on-demand control of both retroreflections and anomalous reflections using a non-interleaved single-celled metasurface. By multiplexing four channels connecting two spin states excited onto each input of three spatial frequencies, a total of twelve channels are engineered, among which three are retroreflected channels and the residual are anomalous reflection ones. Our compound multiplexed super-reflector allows five degrees of freedom in circular polarization Jones' matrix, approaching the intrinsic upper limit of such planar metasurface. The concept has been experimentally verified by a proof-of-concept super-reflector at microwave frequency, showcasing twelve reflected beams and a high efficiency exceeding 90.6% defined as the ratio of reflected power to incidence for each channel beam. Our strategy opens a new avenue for angle multiplexing and angle-resolved metadevices toward the capacity limit of 2D planar Jones’ matrix.

Multidimensionally Manipulated Active Coding Metasurface by Merging Pancharatnam–Berry Phase and Dynamic Phase

Integrating active and passive manipulation of electromagnetic (EM) waves has significant advantages for the caliber synthesis of microwave and optical integrated devices. In previous schemes, most reported designs focus only on active ways of manipulating self-radiating EM waves, such as antennas and lasers, or passive ways of manipulating external incident EM waves, such as lenses and photonic crystals. Here, we proposed a paradigm that integrates active and passive manipulation of EM waves in a reconfigurable way. As demonstrated, circularly polarized, linearly polarized, and elliptically polarized waves with customized beams are achieved in passive operation by merging Pancharatnam-Berry phases and dynamic phases, while the radiating EM waves with a customized gain are achieved by coupling the coding elements with the radiation structure in the active manipulation. Either active or passive manipulation is determined by the sensed signals and operating state to reduce detectability. Encouragingly, the proposed strategy will excite new sensing and communication opportunities, enabling advanced conceptions for next-generation compact EM devices.

Temperature-Adaptive Reconfigurable Chiral Metamaterial for Tailoring Circular Dichroism Based on Shape Memory Alloy

Equipped with the capability of simultaneous phase and amplitude modulation, the chiral metasurfaces have broken through the weak chiroptical responses of natural media, giving birth to a number of unprecedented phenomena. However, the performance of passive metasurface is inadequate to realize dynamic manipulation to fit the diverse and changeable operation requirements, which would damage their engineering applications. Here, a circular dichroism meta-mirror consisting of Archimedean spiral-based meta-atoms is proposed to achieve dynamic scattering modulation. Combining the strategy of loading active element, the chiroptical responses of a metasurface is smoothly controlled. By controlling bias voltages, continuous scattered reflection amplitude steering can be achieved for the designated spin state while the orthogonal spin state can hardly be influenced. With the assistance of Pancharatnam-Berry phase principle, the metasurface possesses the capability of tailoring waves in coded manner. We experimentally verify the proposed strategy by a 1-bit checkerboard meta-mirror for four-beam scattering pattern. Importantly, the proposed paradigm may find applications in spin-sensitive systems and adaptive camouflage.

Active circular dichroism coding meta-mirror for flexible beam-forming and dynamic amplitude control

Three-dimensional chiral materials with intrinsic chirality play a crucial role in achieving a strong chiral response and flexible light manipulation. Reconfigurable chirality through the 3D morphological transformation of chiral materials is significant for greater freedom in tailoring light but remains a challenge. Inspired by the unique 3D morphological memory capability of shape memory alloys (SMAs), we demonstrate and discuss a chiral resonator in the microwave regime that can realize reconfigurable chirality through 3D morphological transformation. The introduction of heating film realizes voltage control of SMA’s morphology for utilizing the temperature sensitivity of SMA better, enabling arbitrary control of circular dichroism (CD) flip and CD intensity. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of the surface current distribution of chiral enantiomers reveals that the chirality of meta-atoms originates from the surge of electric dipole <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline" id="m1"> <mml:mrow> <mml:msub> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi mathvariant="italic">p</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>x</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> </mml:msub> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> and electric quadrupole Q . It is worth mentioning that the proposed strategy to achieve reconfigurable chirality using 3D morphological transformations can be directly extended to other higher frequencies, such as visible, infrared, and terahertz bands. Significantly, our paradigm to study the relationship between complex 3D morphology and chirality holds potential for application in biosensing, spin detection, and spin-selective devices.
