Left ventricular function and energy metabolism in middle-aged men undergoing long-lasting sustained aerobic oxidative training
Gianluca Perseghin,F. De Cobelli,Antonio Esposito,Elena Belloni,Guido Lattuada,Tamara Canu,Pietro Invernizzi,Francesca Ragogna,A. La Torre,Paola Scifo,Giampietro Alberti,A. Del Maschio,Livio Luzi +12 more
TL;DR: Trained middle-aged subjects showed a better pattern of LV energy metabolism and of diastolic function than their sedentary counterparts, and within the entire population, the PCr/ATP ratio and the E/A peak flow ratio were associated with insulin sensitivity.

Effect of L-acetylcarnitine on body composition in HIV-related lipodystrophy.
Stefano Benedini,Gianluca Perseghin,Ileana Terruzzi,Paola Scifo,Pietro Invernizzi,A. Del Maschio,Adriano Lazzarin,Livio Luzi +7 more
TL;DR: Eight months of L-acetylcarnitine treatment increased lipid oxidation, decreased intramyocellular triglyceride content, and induced a more physiological distribution of fat deposits in patients with lipodystrophy syndrome.

Metabolic effects of a corticosteroid-free immunosuppressive regimen in recipients of pancreatic transplant
Livio Luzi,Lucia Piceni Sereni,Alberto Battezzati,A. Elli,Jean-Paul Soulillou,Diego Cantarovich +5 more
TL;DR: SPK recipients receiving chronic low-dose CS maintenance therapy do not present a lower glucose disposal than CS-free recipients, and this is obtained at the expense of a higher endogenous insulin secretion, which can cause an alteration of the triglyceride profile.

Amino acid- and lipid-induced insulin resistance in rat heart: molecular mechanisms.
Ileana Terruzzi,Sonia Allibardi,Paola Bendinelli,Paola Maroni,Roberta Piccoletti,Flavio Vesco,Michele Samaja,Livio Luzi +7 more
TL;DR: Both lipids and amino acids blocked the insulin effect on glucose uptake and reduced the activity of the IRSs/PI 3-kinase/Akt/GSK3 axis leading to the activation of glucose transport and glycogen synthesis in the isolated rat heart.

Effect of a variable hepatic insulin clearance on the postprandial insulin profile: insights from a model simulation study.
TL;DR: The results indicate that a 20% inhibition in hepatic clearance is able to remarkably enhance the plasma insulin level following a meal, and emphasise the need for simple and accurate methods to measure the time course of hepatic insulin extraction under nonsteady-state conditions.
