The model in current virtual assembly system is main geometrical model,and virtual assembly is deficient in the consideration about physical attribute,like mass and force so that the simulation result is inauthentic.Aiming at the problems above,the method on physical assembly process simulation based on multi-rigid-body dynamics in virtual assembly is presented so that assembly process simulation for parts with force input in virtual assembly is realized.The realization method of three key technologies in the method is described in detail: The technology of physical attribute modeling for physical assembly process simulation,the method of multi-rigid-body dynamics mathematic modeling and the method of rigid-body collision process simulation and analysis in virtual assembly.The method is implemented in proto-type system virtual assembly process planning(VAPP) and is validated through some examples.

Physical Assembly Process Simulation Based on Multi-rigid-body Dynamics in Virtual Assembly

The collaborative virtual assembly has three important characters that are interaction, process and distribution. However, 
the present assembly models can not support those characters effectively, whatever from the aspects of assembly 
constraints obtaining, modeling method, or model architecture. The abstract of assembly constraint is related to the 
support capability to the assembly unit's actions, and the generalization degree to the assembly information. 
Furthermore, the most assembly models can only present the internal relation but not provide functions to external. To 
solve the existing issues, this paper studies the semantic abstract of assembly constraint, i.e. captures the knowledge from 
the application field of mechanical product assembly and induces the basic semantics of assembly constraint. Then, this 
paper brings forward an extended object semantic modeling method, by which structures the assembly constraint with 
the function and behavior characters and constructs distributed assembly constraint semantic models, which are 
independent of the implementation and could offer a way for the interoperation between different applications. The 
experimental result of the VEADAM system shows that the distributed assembly constraint semantic models can 
effectively support the implement of distributed virtual assembly and adapt the variety of applications.

Distributed-virtual-assembly-oriented semantic modeling technology

The application of advanced virtual reality technology and product exchange technology is the main process of the virtual prototype for supporting virtual assembly of product life cycle. Taking a typically complex mechanical product – pumps as an example, this paper analyzed the assembly model of mechanical products, built the virtual assembly scene, and applied the DFA and virtual reality technology to implement the virtual assembly, virtual operation and real-time interaction through VRML and Script nodes in the virtual environment. Meanwhile, by applying the method of Bounding Boxes, the collision detection analysis during the process of assembly is completed. It presented a new design and implementation method for developing complex machinery.

Virtual assembly of mechanical components and collision detection

The virtual assembly is a technology that is widely applied in the digital manufacturing field. However, the production line assembly simulation is a new research direction of virtual assembly. This article focuses on the topics of the production processes in the chemical industry. It firstly analyzes and simplifies the geometries and functions of the chemical equipment. Then, it summarizes and designs the properties of assembly virtual device. On this basis, this paper proposes a method based on connector balls to store the assembly information of virtual devices and formulates a complete series of virtual assembly rules. The feasibility of the method has been confirmed by an experiment.

Tailor rolled blank(TRB) is an new techniques of metal sheets, its manufacturing technology is involved in the process of multi-fields and multi-subjects synergism. For shorted exploiting cycle, reducing designing cost and improving the shape quality, the design method, namely rapid virtual design , was put forward for modeling of TRB rolled processes. Its flow chart, design system and structure were established. Simultaneously, the Rapid virtual design proceeding and the frame model based on integrated modeling conditions were presented. These will provide the technology support for rolled TRB and impulse the application of TRB in auto-body ligh-weight.

Virtual assembly is one of the most important applications of virtual reality in product design fields. Virtual assembly method based on physically modeling is proposed for further investigating the kinematics and dynamics performance of assembling parts during virtual assembly process in this paper. The automatic constraints mapping method, which maps geometrical constraints implied in assembly relationships onto joint relationships based on degree of freedom analysis, is presented to construct the physical constraint models for physically simulation in virtual assembly environment. A variable stiffness spring model, which maps the geometrical displacement onto assembly force, is devised to realize the interactive input of assembly force. The methods are implemented in the development of VIRDAS (Virtual Reality Design and Assembly System) and the primary process of virtual assembly based on physically modeling in VIRDAS is also given in this paper.
