To study and locate partial discharge(PD) and analyze the transient state of power transformer, there is a need for a high frequency model of transformer winding and calculation of its parameters. Due to the high frequency nature of partial discharge phenomenon, there is a need for an accurate model for this frequency range. To attain this goal, a Multi-Conductor Transmission Line (MTL) model is used in this paper for modeling this transformer winding. In order that the MTL model can properly simulate the transformer behavior within a frequency range it is required that its parameters be accurately calculated. In this paper, all the basic parameters of this model are calculated by the use of Finite Element Method (FEM) for a 20kV winding of a distribution transformer. The comparison of the results obtained from this model with the obtained shape of the waves by the application of PD pulse to the winding in laboratory environment shows the validity and accuracy of this model.

Transformer Winding Modeling based on Multi-Conductor Transmission Line Model for Partial Discharge Study

IEEE standard has been specified Almost 30.6% of total faults in power transformer are electrical failures. Exact location of Partial Discharges (PD) is of a major concern. Therefore, techniques for locating the PD sources are very important in both the maintenance and repair a transformer. A new technique is proposed for partial discharge locating and pulse propagation of PDs. The proposed method is based on wavelet and that is the injection of the PD current source in various nodes of an identified model and then measurement of the current in bushing and grounded neutral separately. By applying a specific wavelet transform and also statistic mathematic methods into measured currents, some criterions are achieved for the accurate location of PDs.

This paper presents a new method to locate partial discharge source of transformer single-winding with the transformer single-winding model and Matlab software simulation. This transformer single-winding model is composed of 300m long wire, which is equivalent to the parameter model composed of only capacitors and inductors through the frequency characteristic analysis of transformer winding. In the process of simulation, the bushing and neutral point current of transformer winding are measured when partial discharge occurs in different position. Then we can get position factor related to the current mean and variance measured through calculation, analysis and deduction. Accordingly the position of partial discharge can be found by corresponding relation. This simulation indicates that this method is effective and practical.

Location of Partial Discharge Source Model Based on Transformer Single-Winding

Based on the transformer winding inductance model which presented by P.I. Fergested, a new kind of calculation method is presented, which the inductance parameters are divided into the hollow inductance and core inductance two separate parts, each part is divided into self-inductance and mutual-inductance, while the related parameter values are discussed. The measurement results are consistent with the calculation results of the inductance parameters in an actual transformer winding model, which verifies the calculation method is correct and feasible, the theoretical basis can be provided for accurately analyzing the very fast transient process in the transformer winding.

In view of the complex internal structure of the transformer, this paper presented the theoretical foundation of high sensitivity ultrasonic sensor signal receiving mechanism, and the relationship between ultrasonic signal amplitude modulation information and the location and shape information of the transformer internal structure. Through the study of ultrasound folding and reflection law in different internal media of transformer, the relationship between ultrasonic signals and the transformer internal structure is revealed, and the internal structure of transformer is imaged.

The research and application of ultrasonic imaging technology in transformer internal fault detection

Based on multi-conductor transmission lines (MTLs) theory, a new model of partial discharge pulse propagating in single phase transformer is established. The parameter matrices C in the model are calculated based on static-steady electromagnetic field theory, and other parameters R, L, and G result from the relationship between the parameters. The transformation of mode voltages and mode currents is applied in order to obtain MTL general solution, and the transfer functions of transformer winding are obtained, then scattering parameter method for measuring the transfer characteristics of transformers winding are presented. The experimental results tested on 180-turn single winding and 400 kV transformer winding consistent with the simulation results derived from their MTL model.
