Functional phase change materials (PCMs) capable of reversibly storing and releasing tremendous thermal energy during the isothermal phase change process have recently received tremendous attention in interdisciplinary applications. The smart integration of PCMs with functional supporting materials enables multiple cutting-edge interdisciplinary applications, including optical, electrical, magnetic, acoustic, medical, mechanical, and catalytic disciplines etc. Herein, we systematically discuss thermal storage mechanism, thermal transfer mechanism, and energy conversion mechanism, and summarize the state-of-the-art advances in interdisciplinary applications of PCMs. In particular, the applications of PCMs in acoustic, mechanical, and catalytic disciplines are still in their infancy. Simultaneously, in-depth insights into the correlations between microscopic structures and thermophysical properties of composite PCMs are revealed. Finally, current challenges and future prospects are also highlighted according to the up-to-date interdisciplinary applications of PCMs. This review aims to arouse broad research interest in the interdisciplinary community and provide constructive references for exploring next generation advanced multifunctional PCMs for interdisciplinary applications, thereby facilitating their major breakthroughs in both fundamental researches and commercial applications.

Phase Change Thermal Storage Materials for Interdisciplinary Applications.

Benefiting from the inherent properties of ultralight weight, ultrahigh porosity, ultrahigh specific surface area, adjustable thermal/electrical conductivities, and mechanical flexibility, aerogels are considered ideal supporting alternatives to efficiently encapsulate phase change materials (PCMs) and rationalize phase transformation behaviors. The marriage of versatile aerogels and PCMs is a milestone in pioneering advanced multifunctional composite PCMs. Emerging aerogel-based composite PCMs with high energy storage density are accepted as a cutting-edge thermal energy storage (TES) concept, enabling advanced functionality of PCMs. Considering the lack of a timely and comprehensive review on aerogel-based composite PCMs, herein, we systematically retrospect the state-of-the-art advances of versatile aerogels for high-performance and multifunctional composite PCMs, with particular emphasis on advanced multiple functions, such as acoustic-thermal and solar-thermal-electricity energy conversion strategies, mechanical flexibility, flame retardancy, shape memory, intelligent grippers, and thermal infrared stealth. Emphasis is also given to the versatile roles of different aerogels in composite PCMs and the relationships between their architectures and thermophysical properties. This review also showcases the discovery of an interdisciplinary research field combining aerogels and 3D printing technology, which will contribute to pioneering cutting-edge PCMs. This review aims to arouse wider research interests among interdisciplinary fields and provide insightful guidance for the rational design of advanced multifunctional aerogel-based composite PCMs, thus facilitating the significant breakthroughs in both fundamental research and commercial applications.

A Structured Phase Change Material with Controllable Thermoconductive Highways Enables Unparalleled Electricity via Solar-Thermal-Electric Conversion

As one of the main forms and intermediate carriers of energy, it is impressive to expand the application scope of heat energy, thereby boosting innovations in heat harvesting, conversion, storage, regulation, and utilization associated with the relevant techniques. Phase change materials (PCMs), as a state‐of‐the‐art latent heat storage technique, have garnered increasing interest in heat‐related applications over the past decades, and abundant high‐performance PCMs with excellent shape stability and salient thermal conductivity have been developed. This review focuses on the issues concerning organic PCMs from the perspectives of flexible, multifunctional, and smart phase change composites, along with emerging applications and processing technologies, which are expected to offer possible guidance for the exploration of next‐generation advanced functional phase change composites.

Exploring Next‐Generation Functional Organic Phase Change Composites

The marriage of two-dimensional materials and phase change materials for energy storage, conversion and applications

Effective and reliable encapsulation of phase change materials (PCMs) is essential and critical to the high-performance solar-thermal energy harvesting and storage. However, challenges remain pertaining to manufacturing scalability, high efficiency in energy storage/release, and anti-leakage of melted PCMs. Herein, inspired by natural legume, a facile and scalable extrusion-based core-sheath 3D printing strategy is demonstrated for directly constructing bean-pod-structured octadecane (OD)/graphene (BOG) phase change microlattices, with regular porous configuration as well as individual and effective encapsulation of OD "beans" into highly interconnected graphene network wrapping layer built by closely stacked and aligned graphene sheets. The unique architectural features enable the ready spreading of light into the interior of phase change microlattice, a high transversal thermal conductivity of 1.67 W m-1 K-1 , and rapid solar-thermal energy harvesting and transfer, thereby delivering a high solar-thermal energy storage efficiency, and a large phase change enthalpy of 190 J g-1 with 99.1% retention after 200 cycles. Most importantly, such encapsulated PCMs feature an exceptional thermal reliability and stability, with no leakage and shape variation even at 1000 thermal cycles and partial damage of BOG. This work validates the feasibility of scalably printing practical encapsulated PCMs, which may revolutionize the fabrication of composite PCMs for solar-thermal energy storage devices.

Bean-Pod-Inspired 3D-Printed Phase Change Microlattices for Solar-Thermal Energy Harvesting and Storage.

The invention discloses a graphene-carbon nanotube film composite film as well as a preparation method and application thereof. The graphene-carbon nanotube film composite film comprises a graphene film layer and a carbon nanotube film layer which are sequentially stacked in the thickness direction, and the graphene film layer is composed of multiple layers of graphene. The preparation method comprises the following steps: preparing graphene oxide-carbon nanotube film composite film by modification composition of a graphene oxide layer onto the surface of the carbon nanotube film; and sequentially carrying out carbonization treatment and graphitization treatment on the graphene oxide-carbon nanotube film composite film in a protective atmosphere to prepare the light flexible high-thermal-conductivity high-electric-conductivity graphene-carbon nanotube film composite film mainly composed of carbon nanotubes and graphene. The disclosed composite film has excellent thermal conductivity and mechanical properties, the in-plane thermal conductivity is 150 W/m.K or above, the density is 0.5 g/cm or below, the mechanical properties are improved by 3-5 times that of a carbon nanotube film, and meanwhile, the disclosed composite film has very good conductivity.
