Dependability Benchmarking for Computer Systems

The resilience of computing systems includes their dependability as well as their fault tolerance and security. It defines the ability of a computing system to perform properly in the presence of various kinds of disturbances and to recover from any service degradation. These properties are immensely important in a world where many aspects of our daily life depend on the correct, reliable and secure operation of often large-scale distributed computing systems. Wolter and her co-editors grouped the 20 chapters from leading researchers into seven parts: an introduction and motivating examples, modeling techniques, model-driven prediction, measurement and metrics, testing techniques, case studies, and conclusions. The core is formed by 12 technical papers, which are framed by motivating real-world examples and case studies, thus illustrating the necessity and the application of the presented methods. While the technical chapters are independent of each other and can be read in any order, the reader will benefit more from the case studies if he or she reads them together with the related techniques. The papers combine topics like modeling, benchmarking, testing, performance evaluation, and dependability, and aim at academic and industrial researchers in these areas as well as graduate students and lecturers in related fields. In this volume, they will find a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in a field of continuously growing practical importance.

Resilience Assessment and Evaluation of Computing Systems

The assessment of the dependability properties of a system (dependability benchmarking) is a critical step when choosing among similar components/products. This paper presents a proposal for the benchmarking of the dependability properties of web-servers. Our benchmark is composed of the three key components: measures, workload, and faultload. We use the SPECWeb99 benchmark as starting point, adopting the workload and performance measures from this performance benchmark, and we added the faultload and new measures related to dependability. We illustrate the use of the proposed benchmark through a case-study involving two widely used web servers (Apache and Abyss) running on top of three different operating systems. The faultloads used encompass software faults, hardware faults and network faults. We show that by using the proposed dependability benchmark it is possible to observe clear differences regarding dependability properties of the web-servers.

Dependability Benchmarking of Web Servers

A common drawback of the image sharing with steganography approaches is that the revealed secret image is distorted due to the truncation of the grayscale secret image. To lossless reveal the secret image in the ( t , n )- threshold, we provide a novel sharing scheme in this article. Moreover, the original host image can be recovered by the embedded shadow images. To accomplish the above purposes, the proposed scheme derives the secret shadows and generates the meaningful shadow images by adopting the sudoku. In the new scheme, the sudoku grid is setting to 16  16 and divided into sixteen 4  4 blocks. Thus, we can embed 4  ( t -1) secret bits into each pixel pair of the host image. Besides, the embeddable secret capacity can be improved according to the threshold t in the ( t , n )-threshold sharing system. The experiments show that the shadows can be successfully camouflaged in the host image with satisfactory quality. The distortion of the embedded host pixels is limited within range [0, 3]. Moreover, the proposed scheme provides a large capacity for embedded secret data.

Reliability is a rapidly growing concern in contemporary personal computer (PC) industry, both for computer users as well as product developers. To improve dependability, systems designers and programmers must consider failure and usage data for operating systems as well as applications. In this paper, we discuss our experience with crash and usage data collection for Windows machines. We analyze results based on crashes in the UC Berkeley EECS department.

Crash data collection: a Windows case study

A number of the industrial partners of the IFIP WG 10.4 Dependability Benchmarking SIG (SIGDeB) have identified a set of standardized classes for characterizing the dependability of computer systems. The proposed classification system seeks to enable comparison of different computer systems in the dimensions of availability, data integrity, disaster recovery, and security. Different sets of criteria are proposed for computer systems that are used for different application types, e.g. transaction processing, process control, etc. This paper describes the classification system, and gives a progress report on the work to fill in the details of the classification criteria
