Numerical characterization of a novel test bench featuring secondary reactions of methane

Abstract The Partially Stirred Reactor (PaSR) model is carried out for the ammonia-air combustion system by means of stochastic modeling, namely by solving the transport equation for the joint Probability Density Function (PDF). The turbulent mixing is accounted for by the Linear Mean-Square Estimation (LMSE) mixing model. Notwithstanding the simplified nature of the PaSR modeling, the transported-PDF method enables capturing the effect of mixing frequency on the combustion system, especially the NOx emission. Since the chemical source term is in a closed form in the transported-PDF method, it allows us to apply different chemical mechanisms to explore, whether the set of elementary reactions that are identified as important for the prediction of NOx in the PaSR model is sensitive to the choice of chemical mechanisms. Furthermore, the effect of the residence time in the PaSR model has also been studied, and compared with those in the Perfectly Stirred Reactor (PSR) model (infinite large mixing frequency). Moreover, since the ammonia under oxygen enrichment shows some similar combustion behaviors in terms of e.g. laminar burning velocity as the ammonia under hydrogen enrichment, how large the difference of thermo-kinetic states (e.g. temperature and NOx emission) predicted by PaSR models and in laminar premixed flame configuration is also investigated. A further discussion focuses on the effect of thermal radiation, where the radiative heat loss roles in the prediction of NOx for the turbulent simulation is examined. By using the optically thin approximation model, it is shown that the thermal radiation exhibits little effect on the considered combustion systems within a typical turbulent time-scale.

The dynamics of an edge flame in a mixing layer is considered. The flame, which stands at a well-defined distance from the plate separating the fuel and oxidizer streams, is stabilized by heat conducted back to the relatively cold plate. It has a tribrachial structure that consists of a lean premixed segment leaning toward the oxidizer side, a rich premixed segment leaning toward the fuel side, and a diffusion flame trailing behind. Within the context of a diffusive-thermal model, we describe numerically the steady and unsteady behavior of the flame. The primary objective is to systematically identify the conditions for the onset of oscillations examining, in particular, the influence of differential diffusion, mixture strength, flow rate, and radiative heat losses.

The characteristics of partially-premixed flames is investigated by simulating a series of triple flames with different variations of chemical equivalent ratio. A 2-D reaction-diffusion manifold chemistry tabulation method is employed in the simulation and the results are compared with the CH4-air 19-step chemical reaction mechanism. The performance of these two mechanisms is then assessed by using direct numerical simulations coupled with GRI3.0 detailed mechanism. It is shown that both 2-D reaction-diffusion manifold table and 19-step simplified mechanism can describe the temperature and main products accurately, however, for some minor intermediary products, predictions from 2-D reaction-diffusion manifold table is observed to be better than 19-step simplified mechanism. Com-pared with the 19-step mechanism, 2-D reaction-diffusion manifold table only needs to solve only the transport equations for CO2 and N2 species, which greatly simplifies the solution process of chemical reaction and provides a reliable solution for the numerical simulation of turbulence with higher accuracy. This work indicates that as a relatively advanced kinetic simplified method, the reaction-diffusion manifold tabulation method can reduce the computational cost and at the same time retain the accuracy effectively.
