Since Roll-Over Protective Structures (ROPS) are mandatory on tractors, the number of fatalities caused in the event of an upset is definitely reduced. Nevertheless, fatal accidents caused by machine loss of stability are still of great concern. In fact, despite ROPS have reduced injury to agricultural operators, tractor stability is still a complex issue due to its high versatility in use, especially considering normal operations in field, when interactions with the environment such as soil morphology and climatic conditions are involved, as well as interactions with operator skills and experience. With the aim of collecting data on different variables influencing the dynamics of tractors in field, a commercial device that allows the continuous monitoring of working conditions and the active configuration of the machines was fitted on standard tractors in normal operation at the experimental farm of the Bologna University. The device consists of accelerometers, gyroscope, GSM/GPRS, GPS for geo-referencing and a transceiver for the automatic recognition of tractor-connected equipment. A microprocessor processes data and provides information, through a dedicated algorithm requiring data on the geometry of the tested tractor, on the level of risk for the operator in terms of probable loss of stability and suggests corrective measures to reduce the potential instability of the tractor.

Methodological approach to assess tractor stability in normal operation in field using a commercial warning device

In this paper, we describe the development of a new and innovative tool of video mashup. This application is an easy to use tool of video editing integrated in a cross-media platform; it works taking the information from a repository of videos and puts into action a process of semi-automatic editing supporting users in the production of video mashup. Doing so it gives vent to their creative side without them being forced to learn how to use a complicated and unlikely new technology. The users will be further helped in building their own editing by the intelligent system working behind the tool: it combines semantic annotation (tags and comments by users), low level features (gradient of color, texture and movements) and high level features (general data distinguishing a movie: actors, director, year of production, etc.) to furnish a pre-elaborated editing users can modify in a very simple way.

The art of video MashUp: supporting creative users with an innovative and smart application

The design of approaches for supporting the user in the navigation of a variety of contents is an interesting area of research with many potential applications. In particular, interactive television (iTV) offers users the opportunity of accessing a huge amount of contents, ranging from general to specialized ones. As a consequence, the exploration of such contents must be supported in some way. In this paper, we present an innovative approach that integrates some recent methodologies and technologies developed in different areas of Artificial Intelligence and the Web: user-model-based adaptation, social networking, semantic annotation, and content sharing. We show how the integration of these technologies can provide interesting opportunities for a new approach to content navigation and discovery based on the possibility of exploring personalized networks of contents, users and concepts. Also, we focus on the specific goal of designing a platform for accessing iTV contents with the aim of providing the user with many alternative ways of exploring and discovering potentially interesting videos. After discussing the application, integrated in a project by Telecom Italia for a new paradigm of iTV, we preset the architecture we designed for integrating the methodologies discussed above.

Supporting content discovery and organization in networks of contents and users

A geographically homogeneous group of citizens shares much common knowledge, characteristics of their culture and history. This knowledge is captured for the use in an item-based recommender system that uses textual information, by introducing bias corpora: newspaper articles that represent the shared knowledge. We present a technique for incorporating and quickly replacing bias corpora in a case study of recommendation of TV contents on our IPTV platform. With this recommender, users watched more items and expressed satisfaction with the service.

DynamicTV: a culture-aware recommender

Capturing TV user behaviour in fictional character descriptions

The current market of television services adopts several broadcast technologies (e.g. IPTV, DVBH, DTT), delivering different ranges of contents. These services may be extremely heterogeneous, but they're all affected by the continuous increase in quantity of contents and this trend is becoming more and more complicated to manage. Hence, future television services must respond to an emerging question: in what way could the navigation among this increasing volume of multimedia contents be facilitated? To answer this question, a research study was conducted, resulting in a set of guidelines for Interactive TV development. At first, the current scenario was portrayed through a functional analysis of existing TV systems and a survey of actual and potential users. Subsequently, interaction models which could possibly be applied to Interactive TV (e.g.: peer-to-peer programs) were assessed. Guidelines were eventually defined as a synthesis of current best practices and new interactive features.

However, this growth has been rather disordered in terms of its consequences for vehicle dashboard and cabin design, into which many complex human-machine interfaces have been introduced. Improved in-vehicle warning systems that incorporate visual, auditory, or tactile signals can lower the incidence of farm equipment rollover and runover accidents. In this article, we propose a methodology to identify requirements for warning systems aimed at reducing the risk of rollover and runover accidents while moving loads (e.g., hay, grain, soil) with front loading tractors.
