Applying digital technology to help enterprises' innovation activities has become a trend in the context of global industrial digital transformation. Can 5G, an emerging digital technology, help manufacturing enterprises improve the efficiency of technological innovation? This article regards the 5G Technology Pilot Construction policy conducted in China in 2018 as an experiment and investigates how promoting and applying this new digital technology impacts the technology innovation efficiency of manufacturing enterprises. Our research finds that the promotion of 5G technology can significantly improve the technology innovation efficiency of manufacturing enterprises. In addition, the empowering effect of promoting 5G technology on the technology innovation efficiency of manufacturing enterprises is more prominent for cities with higher digital financial capabilities and enterprises with lower technology capabilities. These research findings have important policy implications and theoretical references for countries worldwide to widely promote the construction of 5G technology and combine different scenarios to promote the technology innovation efficiency of manufacturing enterprises. 

Disrupting the Technology Innovation Efficiency of Manufacturing Enterprises Through Digital Technology Promotion: An Evidence of 5G Technology Construction in China

Continuing energy consumption is a major cause of global warming, and currently carbon neutrality is increasingly becoming an important task for low-carbon development. Based on the context of Industry 4.0, this paper explores whether enterprise digital transformation (DT) can enhance its carbon performance using industrial enterprise data from 2012 to 2020 in China. It is found that DT is significantly positive impact its carbon performance, and the findings are still valid after the robustness assessment. The channel test uncovers that enterprises in the process of digital transformation can enhance their innovation capacity, improve factor allocation efficiency, increase research and development (R&D) investment and optimize supply chain structure, thus raising their carbon performance. Heterogeneity analysis uncovers that the facilitating impact of DT on carbon performance is more pronounced in eastern, highly market-oriented and resource-based regions. Additionally, this promotion effect is also stronger in non-state-owned enterprises and large enterprises. The current research uncovers the benefits of DT for low-carbon development at the micro-level and provides relevant policy insights to further promote DT and enhance carbon performance in Industry 4.0 era. 

Has enterprise digital transformation facilitated the carbon performance in Industry 4.0 era? Evidence from Chinese industrial enterprises

Abstract Technology entrepreneurship and corporate innovation are important for the development of indigenous innovation. In the digital age, founders are subject to fundamental changes in their strategy choices, which in turn affect corporate innovation performance. This paper aims to explore the strategic choices adopted by technical founders of listed companies in China’s STAR market to reap the rewards of innovation in a digital context. Based on the annual reports of 124 listed companies in China’s STAR Market, this paper applies machine learning methods to quantify digital transformation of enterprises, and empirically analyzes the relationship between technical founders and innovation performance by constructing a moderated mediating model. Our results show that companies with technical founders are more likely to adopt digital transformation and thus show better innovation performance. In terms of heterogeneity, the empirical results demonstrate that firms with technical founders show better performance in digital transformation, followed in turn by those with business founders and academic founders. Both the positive relationship between enterprise digital transformation and innovation performance and the mediating effect of digital transformation are positively moderated by venture capital or private equity support. The findings reveal the microscopic mechanism of the role of technology-based founders on corporate innovation performance and hence have practical implications for promoting corporate digital transformation and enhancing firm technological innovation.

Technical founders, digital transformation and corporate technological innovation: empirical evidence from listed companies in China’s STAR market

The underlying mechanism and boundary condition of the effects of emerging digital technology on firms’ innovation activities need to be analysed. This study intends to explore how digital technology adoption (DTA) influences innovation performance (IP) in the context of firm digital transformation based on digital empowerment perspective and knowledge-based view. The mediating effect of knowledge base breadth (KBB) and knowledge base depth (KBD) and the moderating effect of technological capability (TC) are proposed and evaluated using panel data from Chinese listed companies. The results indicate that DTA significantly improves innovation performance, and this effect is mediated by KBB and KBD. Moreover, the indirect effect of the KBB is moderated by TC, which is not significant for KBD. Our findings offer an enhanced understanding of the performance implications of digital technologies and provide managerial insights into how unique competitive advantages and sustainable development of firms can be maintained in the digital economy era. 

Digital technology adoption and innovation performance: a moderated mediation model

PurposeThis study aims to explore the boundary conditions of the relationship between challenge-hindrance stressors and innovative work behavior via task crafting and psychological detachment.Design/methodology/approachThe data were collected from 238 questionnaires in five technology R&D enterprises in Tianjin, China. The paper utilized structural equation modeling and cross-sectional design to test hypotheses by AMOS and examined the mediating and moderating effects using the bootstrapping method by SPSS.FindingsChallenge stressors indirectly improved innovative work behavior via task crafting, while hindrance stressors did not affect task crafting or innovative work behavior. Psychological detachment moderated the relationship between challenge stressors and innovative work behavior. When psychological detachment was high, innovative work behavior did not change regardless of challenge stressors. When psychological detachment was low, innovative work behavior increased with the increase of challenge stressors.Originality/valueThe study explains the link mechanism between stressors and innovative work behavior. It enriches the research on psychological detachment as a moderator and provides a new frame for enterprises to develop employees' innovation.

The relationship between stressors and Chinese employees' innovative work behavior: the role of task crafting and psychological detachment

PurposeThis study aims to investigate the multiple influence paths or underlying mechanisms of entrepreneurial leadership (EL) on adaptive innovation from the perspectives of organizational learning and resource management, drawing on complex adaptive system theory.Design/methodology/approachWith a questionnaire survey of 317 senior and middle managers from different firms in China, structural equation modeling was used to test the hypothesized conceptual model, and bootstrapping method was employed to examine the multiple mediating effects.FindingsResults indicate that EL has a significant and positive effect on adaptive innovation. This relationship is partially mediated through exploitative learning, exploratory learning, resource bricolage and boundary-spanning integration, respectively. The impact of EL on adaptive innovation is also sequentially transmitted through exploitative learning and resource bricolage or exploratory learning and boundary-spanning integration.Originality/valueAdaptive innovation has become a firm competition strategy to cope with dynamic changes in current uncertain environment where EL can play its effectiveness to engage firms in such innovation activities. However, the question of why and how EL drives adaptive innovation has yet to be discussed. This study highlights the innovation effectiveness of EL and the triggering process of adaptive innovation, and contributes to several countermeasures for firms to implement leadership and innovation practices responding to uncertain environment.

Survival of the fittest: the multiple paths of entrepreneurial leadership driving adaptive innovation in uncertain environment

The digital era leads the digital transformation of firms to become a significant way to drive innovation. However, the existing research has not deeply discussed how digitalisation empowering firm innovation breaks the game. Through configuration thinking and holistic perspective, using technology-organisation-environment (TOE) framework, this study explores the multiple concurrent factors of digitalisation empowering firm innovation. Based on the cases of 30 Chinese high-tech firms, this study investigates the configuration effect of six important factors on firm innovation ability by fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). The results show that three conditional configurations or innovation paths can contribute to high firm innovation ability, namely technology-organisation driven innovation, organisation led innovation and comprehensive collaborative innovation. Among them, digital infrastructure is the underlying support for digitalisation empowering firm innovation, and cross-boundary cooperation plays a key role in such innovation. The main findings have theoretical and practical significance for firm innovation under the digital background.
