China’s long-term economic dynamics pose a formidable challenge to economic historians. The Qing Empire (1644 –1911), the world’ s largest national economy before 1800, experienced a tripling of population during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries with no signs of diminishing per capita income. While the timing remains in dispute, a vast gap emerged between newly rich industrial nations and China’s lagging economy in the wake of the Industrial Revolution. Only with an unprecedented growth spurt beginning in the late 1970s did this great divergence separating China from the global leaders substantially diminish, allowing China to regain its former standing among the world’s largest economies. This essay develops an integrated framework for understanding that entire history, including both the divergence and the recent convergent trend. We explain how deeply embedded political and economic institutions that contributed to a long process of extensive growth before 1800 subsequently prevented China from capturing the benefits associated with the Industrial Revolution. During the twentieth century, the gradual erosion of these historic constraints and of new obstacles erected by socialist planning eventually opened the door to China’s current boom. Our analysis links China’s recent development to important elements of its past, while using recent success to provide fresh perspectives on the critical obstacles undermining earlier modernization efforts, and their eventual removal. Can digital transformation improve market and ESG performance? Evidence from Chinese SMEs

This paper aims to offer new theoretical and empirical insights into co-evolutionary development. Theoretically, it advances a political perspective which focuses on the role of power and how this can be translated into influence as an evolutionary driver through the relational framework between an organization and external parties. Empirically, the paper elaborates this perspective by reference to how China's largest container terminal evolved within a changing environment, and how its evolution in turn impacted on the evolution of its sector. In this case, the key relational framework was that between the organization and government institutions. Application of a political perspective to the case study suggests a theoretical model that can inform future research and practice. © 2012 The Authors Journal of Management Studies

Is the digital economy conducive to the development of renewable energy in Asia?

As a new combination of finance and technology, fintech not only makes people's daily life more convenient but also brings new opportunities for firm growth. Yet, although multiple parties in society have benefited tremendously from the development of fintech, its actual impact on FTIE remains unclear. For this purpose, we adopted a two-way fixed-effect model and considered the data of A-share-listed companies from 2011 to 2019 to analyze the impact of fintech development on FTIE in China and its associated mechanism. We found that fintech development negatively affected FTIE by increasing business risks and debt pressures through risk transmission and regulatory arbitrage, respectively. This finding remains robust after using instrumental variable tests and adopting Poisson and Tobin regression models. Furthermore, such negative impacts are higher for firms in the eastern region, nonmanufacturing firms, and state-owned enterprises. Our findings contribute significantly to the literature on technological innovation and financial regulation by shedding light on the negative impacts of the dominating fintech development on FTIE. 

Fintech Development and Firm Technological Innovation Efficiency: Empirical Findings in China

As this remarkable story begins, the Chinese people were just recovering from the devastating effects of the Cultural Revolution and the loss of the country's revered leader Chairman Mao. Deep pockets of ultra-leftist thinking remained, and reformers determined to help bring the Chinese economy and industry out of its backward state faced the challenge of a lifetime. Against tremendous odds and resistance, a determined team of reformers, led by Deng Xiaoping, guided China out of its decades-long international isolation and economic stagnation. Westerners witnessing this astonishing national transformation over the past three decades are familiar with the general outlines of the story of China's economic miracle. But few people - even within China - know the story behind the story. Who were the people who actually made this happen? What were the inside machinations that to China's shift from a planned to a market-oriented economy? By what political and policy processes were the special economic zones, which paved the way to international trade and economic growth, approved and allowed to flourish? Li Lanqing, a senior Chinese official at the forefront of the economic reforms revealed this story for the first time to Chinese readers in 2008, in his acclaimed book Breaking Through. This English edition now offers English readers a rare window onto one of the greatest economic stories of the twentieth century. Li Lanqing, former Minister for Foreign Economic Relations and Trade, among his numerous other official titles, makes a perfect guide to the players and key events of the early days of reform. He was present at the drafting table for many of China's chief decision about the open door policy - including China's first joint venture law - and was present at the negotiating table for the earliest foreign joint ventures, as well as China's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO). This book is informed, not only by Li's personal experience as a trailblazer and a decision-maker, but also by some 330 declassified files, documents and hand-written scripts hitherto unavailable to the public. Breaking Through is not only an historically important book - comprehensive and meticulously detailed - it is also filled with bittersweet and often-amusing personal anecdotes about China's challenges before and during the reform years (from 1977 onwards). This book is a fitting commemoration and tribute to all the stalwart figures who played a role in China's debut onto the world economic scene, upon the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of China's Opening and Reform Policy.

Breaking through : the birth of China's opening-up policy

This study aims to analyse the connection between energy efficiency and renewable energy consumption in the emerging seven (E7) economies during the period 1990–2020. This study also examines the impact of economic growth, carbon emissions and technological innovation on renewable energy. This study employs various panel data approaches that validate the irregular distribution of data and the heterogeneous slopes coefficients. The cross-section dependence test confirms that cross-section dependence is present in the study variables. While these variables are cointegrated. Using non-parametric panel data approaches, the moments' quantile regression results unveil that economic growth is positively associated with renewable energy in all quantiles. Whereas energy efficiency and carbon emissions showed mixed results, negatively affect renewable energy consumption in the lower quantiles, insignificant in the medium quantiles and positive in the higher quantiles. On the other hand, technological innovation is found negatively related to renewable energy consumption. Bidirectional causal association is found between explanatory variables and renewable energy consumption. Based on the empirical findings, this study suggests policies to divert economic growth from fossil fuel energy consumption, enhancing investment in the renewable energy sector, promoting energy efficiency and investment in environmental-related technologies to promote renewable energy. 

Non-parametric research methods to measure energy efficiency and renewable energy nexus: evidence from emerging economies

PurposeThis study aims to analyse the impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on corporate innovation efficiency and the mechanism underlying this effect.Design/methodology/approachData of non-financial listed companies operating in China from 2010 to 2019 were employed. Dual fixed-effects and dynamic panel models were used to explore the relationship between CSR and corporate innovation efficiency, and analyse its heterogeneity.FindingsThe researchers found that CSR reduces innovation efficiency in China. Further, (1) when enterprises conduct CSR to obtain excess returns, it is easy to form excess goodwill; (2) under the pressure of the government and society, enterprises passively assume CSR, thereby crowding out R&D funds; and (3) regardless of whether companies in the high-tech industry actively or passively assume social responsibilities, CSR will not have a significant impact on their innovation efficiency.Research limitations/implicationsThe sample of this research is limited to Chinese A-share listed companies and lacks consideration for small and medium-sized enterprises. Therefore, whether the conclusions of this article are applicable to small and medium-sized enterprises or family enterprises needs further verification.Practical implicationsThe research explores the intrinsic motivation and possible consequences of CSR from the dual perspectives of corporate active and passive.Social implicationsThe ultimate goal of a firm is to make a profit. In practice, few enterprises pay without any return. Perhaps some companies actively assume social responsibilities in order to obtain greater benefits, while passively assume social responsibilities due to oppression.Originality/valueThis study analyses the impact of CSR on corporate innovation efficiency from both active and passive perspectives. The results have important implications for government officials and entrepreneurs.
