Nanofiber polymers are known to offer many attractive properties in various areas of research, industry, medicine, environmental protection, and biotechnologies. These outstanding characteristics also make them promising candidates as the extraction sorbents for sample clean-up before analysis in different areas of analytical chemistry. As sorbents in modern extraction techniques, they provide almost unlimited number of opportunities because of the large number of polymeric materials available and their continuing rapid innovations. While searching for novel extraction sorbents in analytical field is like running a marathon, in case of nanofiber polymers it is rather like a sprint. This review summarizes current advancement in application of nanofiber polymers used as sorbents for extraction and sample pretreatment in analytical techniques. New approaches are included that concern polymer modifications for different extraction and microextraction techniques published during the last decade.

Electrospun nanofiber polymers as extraction phases in analytical chemistry – The advances of the last decade

The development of new sorptive materials with improved properties over the existing ones is one of the main research fields in the microextraction context. Polymers, which have demonstrated a great potential for extraction purposes, are excellent candidates according to their versatility, stability and efficiency. The versatility of polymers can be seen from two different perspectives: (i) they may develop different interaction chemistries with targets even allowing the ad-hoc selection of the polymer and (ii) they can be obtained in different formats (like fibers, coatings, membranes or beads). Polymeric nanofibers, especially those obtained by electrospinning, are characterized by large surface to volume ratio which enhances the extraction kinetics and capacity. In this article, the potential of nanofibers as sorptive phase is presented and discussed with selected references. In addition, the impact of nanofibers composites (either formed by combination of different polymers or combining polymers and nanomaterials) in microextraction is therefore considered.

Determination of diethylstilbestrol in seawater by molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography.

Exposure to endocrine disruptor substances will alter the function of the endocrine system and then cause adverse effects on human health. Among these endocrine disrupting chemicals, hexestrol, nonylphenol, and bisphenol A are most commonly used worldwide. In this study, we aim to develop a simple, rapid, and efficient analytical method for the simultaneous determination of trace hexestrol, nonylphenol, and bisphenol A in lake water and milk samples. A magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer-assisted magnetic solid-phase extraction technique was applied. The magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer was prepared and characterized by electron scanning microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Subsequently, different experiments were conducted to optimize the magnetic solid-phase extraction conditions. High-performance liquid chromatography with UV detection was employed to determine hexestrol, nonylphenol, and bisphenol A. Limits of detection of the developed method were from 0.1 to 0.3 μg L−1 and spiked recoveries ranged from 89.9 to 102.5%, with a relative standard deviation of < 2.5% (intraday). Results obtained from this study showed that the proposed magnetic solid-phase extraction method was a simple, rapid, and sensitive sample pre-treatment method for the determination of trace hexestrol, nonylphenol, and bisphenol in different aqueous samples.

The carbaryl aptamer and the derivative have the advantages of simple preparation step, high efficiency, uniform quality, good stability, short exploitation period, low production cost, simple operation and high security.
