Background Surgical injury stimulates the systemic inflammatory response. The magnitude of the postoperative systemic inflammatory response has been shown to be significantly associated with short and long-term outcomes following surgery of varying severity. Different anesthetic techniques for surgery may have an impact on the postoperative systemic inflammatory response and on the rate of the postoperative infective complications. The aim of the present systematic review was to examine the relationship between perioperative anesthesia, the postoperative systemic inflammatory response and postoperative infective complications in patients undergoing surgery. Methods This was carried out using PubMed and other established databases from 1987 up to March 2018. In particular, randomized controlled studies and systemic inflammation markers, interleukin 6 and C-reactive protein were examined. Results Overall, 60 controlled, randomized clinical trials were included in the review. The mean or median values of both interleukin 6 and C-reactive protein were taken for each study and the mean value was calculated for each anesthetic group at sampling points of 12–24 and 24–72 hours for interleukin 6 and C-reactive protein respectively. When taking the magnitude of surgery into account, TIVA using propofol was significantly associated with a reduction in particular C-reactive protein (P = .04). However, there were no other specific anesthetic methods including general, regional and combined anesthetics that were associated with a reduction in either interleukin 6 or C-reactive protein. Conclusion There is some evidence that anesthetic regimens may reduce the magnitude of the postoperative systemic inflammatory response. However, the studies were heterogeneous and generally of low quality. Future, well conducted, adequately powered studies are required to clarify the effect of anesthesia on the postoperative systemic inflammatory response and infective complications.

Hepatoprotective Effect of Ultrafine Powder of Dendrobium officinale against Acetaminophen-Induced Liver Injury in Mice

Lycium ruthenicum Murr. is rich in polysaccharides, and the polysaccharides in Lycium ruthenicum Murr. (LRPS) have various bioactivities, such as antioxidant activity, anti-tumor activity, neuroprotective activity, and immunomodulatory activity. It has broad prospects in the development of functional foods and pharmaceuticals. Researchers have found that the structural characteristics of LRPS, such as molecular weight, monosaccharide composition, primary structure, etc., have a significant impact on their bioactivities. Therefore, studying the structure of LRPS is of great significance in revealing their bioactivities and mechanisms. This study, based on introducing the preparation methods of LRPS, focuses on reviewing the research progress on the main structural characteristics, various bioactivities, and mechanisms of action of LRPS. In addition, the study provides prospects for the development of LRPS in the fields of food and medicine, aiming to provide theoretical support for its deep processing and application. 

Advances in the Preparation, Structure and Bioactivity of Polysaccharides from Lycium ruthenicum Murr.: A Review

Caralluma dalzielii is a plant whose aerial parts have been used by traditional healers in the North-west Nigeria for the treatment of several ailments including stomach disorders. This research aimed at evaluating the protective effects of the aqueous extract of the aerial parts of Caralluma dalzielii against carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4 )-induced  acute liver injury in Wistar rats. Phytochemical studies were conducted on the extract using standard methods. The extract was administered to the rats in doses of 250, 500 and 750 mg/kg via oral gavage with silymarin as the positive control and distilled water as the negative control for 7 days. After the last pre-treatment dose, oral dose of CCl 4  (1.5 ml/kg) was administered to the study rats. 24 h later, rats were sacrificed and blood samples collected. Aspartate aminotransferase (AST), serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total and conjugated bilirubin, total protein, albumin, urea, creatinine and serum electrolytes levels were determined. Histopathological assessment of the liver and kidney tissues were carried out. Phytochemical analysis showed the presence of saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids, sterols, terpenes, glycosides and tannins. The result showed a significant (p<0.05) decrease in the AST, ALT, ALP and creatinine serum levels compared with CCl 4 - negative control group. Histopathological assessment confirmed that the extract markedly reduced the  toxicity of CCl 4 and preserved the architecture of the liver tissues to near normal structure. These results suggest  that aqueous extract of aerial parts of Caralluma dalzielii may possess hepatoprotective ability. Hepatoprotective activity of the aerial parts of Caralluma dalzielii N. E. Brown against carbon tetrachloride -induced hepatotoxicity in rats

Liver regeneration is the basic physiological process after partial hepatectomy (PH), and is important for the functional rehabilitation of the liver after acute hepatic injury. This study was designed to explore the effects of neurolytic celiac plexus block (NCPB) on liver regeneration after PH. We established a model of PH in rats, assessing hepatic blood flow, liver function, and serum CRP, TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 concentrations of the residuary liver after PH. Additionally, histopathological studies, immunohistochemistry, and western blotting were also performed. Our results indicated that NCPB treatment after PH improved liver regeneration and survival rates, increased hepatic blood flow, reduced hepatocyte damage, decreased the secretion and release of inflammatory cytokines, increased the expression of B cell lymphoma/leukemia-2 (Bcl-2), and decreased the expression of Bcl-2 associated X protein (Bax). Additionally, Western blotting revealed that the expression of NF-κB p65 and c-Jun were decreased in liver after NCPB. In conclusion, the results of our present study indicate that NCPB treatment has a favorable effect on liver regeneration after PH. We suggest that NCPB can be utilized as an effective therapeutic method to help the functional rehabilitation of the liver after acute hepatic injury or liver cancer surgery.
